6k quote for log burner installation

Itsonthestairs · 21/11/2022 22:46

This price doesn't include the cost of the log burner either. I know things have gone up in price but I wasn't expecting that. Its quite a tall house so they would use a cherry picker to a access the roof to install. AIBU or does this sound about right?

Do you have a chimney at the moment?

WineIsMyMainVice · 21/11/2022 22:48

Sounds way over the top to me. We paid about 3k including burner, mantle, hearth and chimney liner. This was 3 years ago but even so…!

DixonD · 21/11/2022 22:49

If it’s tall you’ll need more flue. It does sound really expensive.

We had ours fitted 10 years ago and was probably less than half that. We’d already bought the log burner, so didn’t include the purchase of that. They are expensive on their own.

We do have a chimney upto the top of the 1st floor its been removed from the roof and the loft space.

Friend paid 4.5k last week
They didn't have a chimney

Mykittensmittens · 21/11/2022 22:52

Very expensive. Look for local companies that do a package deal. We have one burner but we are having another in the front room.

hearth, backboards, stove, flue etc, even cutting and refitting the carpet included. 6kw woodpecker stove. £2100.

JaniceBattersby · 21/11/2022 22:53

My husband is a log burner fitter. For a job that needed a twin wall and a cherry picker he would charge £2k ish (cherry picker hire is high at the moment) inc parts and labour. Then the stove price would be on top of that. £6k is utterly ridiculous.

Sisiwawa · 21/11/2022 22:53

I had a quote 2 wks ago, £5k, not a big or tall house, that was all in hearth, mantle etc, would just have to decorate. The guy said average is £5-6k and everyone's getting them due to the cost of fuel!
I've been advised to get 2nd hand and get a good fitter to install

Sisiwawa · 21/11/2022 22:55

Janicebattersby,
What area's does he cover (hopefully Kent?!)

This is what I need @JaniceBattersby thanks for the info

People must be paying if because everyone in my area is booked up for months even at those prices

So they are having to make good an old chimney downstairs, fit something new upstairs and on the roof, hire in a cherry picker, and fit the thing? It sounds like a pain of a iob when most of these guys are booked out. It sounds fair but high and I guess they don’t really need the work at the moment. Going into winter they are usually fully booked- you can get better rates in the spring, but I guess everyone who has been mulling over getting a log burner is now rushing because of energy prices

We paid £3.5k in July this year (South Coast). That was for everything, including the hearth and mantle.
He said he was getting busier, and prices were going up back then.

Yes pretty much although we have pulled the old fire out it's clear all the way up the chimney and its got a lintel already fitted. Your probably right they don't need the work by the sound of it

I'm in 2 minds about this.

a) We're destroying the planet with fossil fuels
b) Energy rates have gone up like 2.5x compared with last year

While an open fire does save on the energy bill, it is still counter-productive because we're going back by a few decades by adding to extra fumes again.

DdraigGoch · 22/11/2022 00:58

Opening out old fireplace, including propping up the wall while a new lintel was installed: £1,100

Installation of hearth: £750

Installation of stove and liner (not counting cost of the stove itself): £1k

Wood isn't a fossil fuel.

Willyoujustbequiet · 22/11/2022 01:32

Just dont bother. Research says they are carcinogenic and so may end up banned eventually.

True

Does burning wood produce carbon dioxide ?
Does burning wood produce particulates?

Of course, the CO2 that's released does come from trees that have grown and have absorbed it in the last 100 years or so, unlike oil and gas. And hopefully trees will absorb the CO2 they release (along with all the other CO2 that is released from fossil fuels)

We need more trees.

Ohheythereitsme · 22/11/2022 08:29

I was once quoted 2k for an absolutely huge chimney with cherry picker. Seems very inflated

Agree with this. You are just polluting the area and the inside of your home. These days a lot of people with small children and wood burners won't even use them as it has such bad impact on the air inside your home. You might as well save the 6K and spend it the boiler doing its job instead.

XanaduKira · 22/11/2022 08:45

Whereabouts are you? We're paying £5k for ours (due to be installed tomorrow and will take 3 days). That includes the stove, scaffolding (that's needed to line the chimney but no chimney work itself as the chimney stack is fine), hearth, surrounds, concrete plinth etc.

We've been waiting about 6 weeks for an installation date, due to how busy they are.

We're in the Midlands.

Conkersareback · 22/11/2022 08:46

I think it's probably about the right price tbh. But yes it's expensive.

Agree with this. You wouldn’t sit around next to the M25 - basically the same air quality
