6k quote for log burner installation

Itsonthestairs · 21/11/2022 22:46

This price doesn't include the cost of the log burner either. I know things have gone up in price but I wasn't expecting that. Its quite a tall house so they would use a cherry picker to a access the roof to install. AIBU or does this sound about right?

Sounds about right, in terms of costs. Ours needs to be lined & insulated with the chimney head repaired and repointed, quotes were all within a spit of each other around £4K. Tall house, etc. You might get a better deal if you buy the stove from them? EG if they’re higher margin items. A lot is in the labour cost...

Handsnotwands · 22/11/2022 08:54

Jesus. £6k! You could have a brilliant, efficient, clean brand new boiler for less than that

eveoha · 22/11/2022 08:54

Stop being led by the nose re wood burners 🙄 and get a dimplex optimyst - But of course prices are high - I’d cash in on the suckers who succumb to zeitgeist too 👍🏿☘️there’s a lot of labour/work goes into the installation -

My husband is a log burner fitter. For a job that needed a twin wall and a cherry picker he would charge £2k ish (cherry picker hire is high at the moment) inc parts and labour. Then the stove price would be on top of that. £6k is utterly ridiculous.

Hope you don't do his quotes!!
the Op needs the chimney rebuilt into the 1st floor, ceiling, into the loft space and out into the roof...thats a shit load of work, plus making good.

Thats before the normal installation costs.

TBH for 11k you could get a solar installation and a battery system, that would save you money too.

Logs aren't cheap and air quality is an issue... esp as folk burn poorly seasoned wood.

Ginglymostomatidae · 22/11/2022 09:00

Expensive.
Maybe they've priced you out, as they didn't want the work, or maybe they're getting the money in because everyone's trying different options to gas/electric and the works there.
Same thing about garden rooms/summer houses. The prices got ridiculous (partly due to material price increase), because everyone wanted one.

WonderingWanda · 22/11/2022 09:08

Get some more quotes, that does seem quite high even with the flue and cherry picker.

OldWivesTale · 22/11/2022 09:09

I think that without seeing this specific job it's impossible for anyone on here to make comparisons; you just need to get more quotes.

EndlessRain · 22/11/2022 09:10

Get a few quotes, but I expect you've picked a terrible time for this as LOADS of people will be wanting these installations so installers can charge what they like more or less.

Croque · 22/11/2022 09:19

I was quoted £4,000 all in this weekend which he claimed was a bargain! However, he would only install woodburners purchased via his business and the brand of woodburner had the same name as his business even though he denied a connection. The thing is that it will cost several thousand pounds regardless of whether they are actually ripping you off or not and to make it worthwhile in cost terms you need to get several years of use out of it.

Mykittensmittens · 21/11/2022 22:52

Very expensive. Look for local companies that do a package deal. We have one burner but we are having another in the front room.

hearth, backboards, stove, flue etc, even cutting and refitting the carpet included. 6kw woodpecker stove. £2100.

Could you possibly PM me the company name if you are within the M25. Thanks.

TheNoonBell · 22/11/2022 09:34

Had our fitted last year. 3 storey house. Inset stove, flue and chimney cap plus fitting was 2.5k.

Luana1 · 22/11/2022 09:43

Ours was 3k which included fitting, flue etc and the stove itself. This was last November and we are in London. Sounds like the company don't want/need your business right now.

snowspider · 22/11/2022 09:47

I don't think it's unreasonable. It is probably about 4k for rebuild of the chimney, open the roof, chimney up to height, lead trays and lead flashing etc. Then 2k for the flue liner install of stove etc. It will need a roofer and bricklayer subcontracted as it's unlikely that stove fitter do this. May be best to get a separate quote for the chimney from a roofer or builder.

snowspider · 22/11/2022 09:49

You may also need planning permission for the chimney.

Southwig22 · 22/11/2022 09:56

I had a quote of 7.5k (the burner was 2.5k) and didn't go ahead as I thought it was massively over priced. They wanted 2k just for materials for the flue.

countrygirl99 · 22/11/2022 09:57

Another's have said it sounds like it isn't a straight forward job and the quote for a straight forward job is bound to be much lower so some of the comments on here may be deceptive.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/11/2022 10:03

Crazy, you could get a solar array on your roof for the cost of the installation and stove cost and then you wouldn't have to shell out for fuel to burn each year, to only use in the winter, to only heat one room and pollute the indoor and outdoor air while you are at it.

Watapalava · 22/11/2022 10:07

It’s not a good energy alternative anymore

the cheap bags of wood are long gone

it’s like £7.50 now for wood that lasts one night!

Meecrowavay · 22/11/2022 10:19

We got a quote like that. Many trades do this. They're busy and have plenty of work on but they'll throw overly inflated quotes out on the off chance that some people will accept them; but no skin off their nose if they don't because they have plenty of jobs booked in! We got another quote for half that amount (inc stove and hearth) and went with them.

ivykaty44 · 22/11/2022 10:26

no mess with clearing out fire, far cheaper to buy and you can move them - so out in the garden or a conservatory or if you move home you take it with you. Cleaner for burning

snowspider · 22/11/2022 10:30

There are a lot of fitters doing package quotes, but it is worth considering that there is a wide variation in materials quality. There are different flue liners, chimney insulation may be excluded or included, hearth may be required and the fireplace itself may be tiled etc. Log burners vary hugely in quality of manufacture and some are very shoddy. Others are sophisticated engineering manufactured to very high standards. Some of the cheaper stoves are very poor and are rebadged to sound like they are made in an artisan local factory in the UK, rather like supermarket meat from Honeysuckle Farm. Cheap stoves can crack and leak. It may be difficult to get replacement firebricks sets.

PragmaticWench · 22/11/2022 10:32

Sisiwawa · 21/11/2022 22:53

I had a quote 2 wks ago, £5k, not a big or tall house, that was all in hearth, mantle etc, would just have to decorate. The guy said average is £5-6k and everyone's getting them due to the cost of fuel!
I've been advised to get 2nd hand and get a good fitter to install

You can't do this anymore, the regulations have changed and fitters can't put in a second hand burner anymore.

BrieAndChilli · 22/11/2022 10:53

wow some of these prices are insane!! we had our done last year as bought a house and the existing one was condemned by the chimney sweep we got round to look at it!

We paid 2k and that was for lining the chimney, enlarging the fireplace, new hearth, new stove.

FIL did end up doing the brick and plastering work in order to speed up the process.

Blossomtoes · 22/11/2022 11:05

We had ours fitted during the summer. It needed a cherry picker and cost £5k including the log burner.
