I'm not sure what the best course of action is here, because my head and gut feeling are contradicting each-other!
I am in my early 30s and fit, run approx. 40km in a usual week and generally very healthy. Since the end of Sept I have been off colour. It started with a coldy/fluy type bug, for which I spent a couple of days in bed, but since then I have not been 100%. I have periods where I feel like I am getting better, but then I seem to get worse again. Symptoms include a (phlegmy) cough, slight snottiness, aches, fatigue, general malaise and sometimes headache and sore throat, although the severity of these varies day to day. I went to the GP last week, as symptoms had been so persistent, and I have some antibiotics for a potential bacterial chest infection (secondary to what was probably an original viral infection) but I am not sure these are having a massive effect and I am already on day four. I also had a chest xray and some blood tests for which I do not yet have the results.
My AIBU is whether I am stupid to continue to run through all of this? I know that I would always tell someone if they have "below the neck" symptoms to rest, but I had a few days off initially, as well as a week off when I went away in October, and it hasn't seemed to make a difference either way. If anything, I actually feel best when I am running because it feels like it opens my lungs up and I don't seem to cough as much when I am doing so. I haven't generally been pushing myself, either in pace or distance, but I have been trotting home from work a few times a week etc. I do get tired afterwards, but I am also generally tired even without exercise so this doesn't seem to be a reliable indicator.
Does anyone have any thoughts? I feel really reluctant to stop exercising just for the sake of it, when it makes me feel good, but equally I don't want to be doing myself harm! Thanks for any input anyone may have.
