To be utterly fed up of covid

SingMeToSIeep · 21/11/2022 09:52

I've just tested positive for the seventh fucking time. Last time was mid September. I've had it five times this year.

I've had to cancel a hospital appointment that had been rescheduled from the last time I had it and a dentist's appointment that I'm desperate for. Also a long planned day out yesterday. Plus I feel like utter shite. Again.

Just want a moan and some sympathy really. Bastard covid.

I thought you weren't supposed to test again within 3 months of having it due to the high rate of false positives?

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 21/11/2022 10:48

Yes, it's still very much with us - still disrupting lives and incomes, and still filling the NHS, both acute beds and the inexorably rising numbers with long covid.

Plus the equivalent of a city the size of Glasgow, or Sheffield, or Bristol, still required to shield because the government has decided not to fund Evusheld. That's a few hundred thousand out of the workforce, plus long covid effect (out of workforce or modified workload) plus repeated sick leave absences.

Other European countries are introducing winter mask mandates, because the effects of unfettered transmission are extensive

For goodness sake, just stop testing & treat it like a cold!

I see you're back pedalling this nonsense.

In some circumstances it's sensible and responsible to test and the OP has explained why she needs to.

That's PCR tests (which aren't generally accessible anymore), not lateral flows. Lateral flows only show positive when you have an active infection.

My dad's just had Covid. He's 75 and has been very unwell lately with a couple of serious illnesses. Thankfully Covid was pretty mild for him. Hooray for the vaccines, eh. (He's had five.)

Always important to point out whenever anyone brings this up that mask mandates in the UK have already failed.

For goodness sake, RTFT.

OP has to test before she takes meds.

tulips27 · 21/11/2022 10:50

Sorry you're unwell. Have you tried Boots Dual Defence spray? It coats the inside of the nose and helps "shorten the duration and severity of cold and flu-like symptoms" (I'm quoting because I don't want to be inaccurate). I don't think it prevents people from getting colds or covid, but may help make them less severe.

BonnesVacances · 21/11/2022 10:50

Are you masking up and trying not to catch it? I know that only goes so far if no one else is though. But it's better than nothing and will confer a level of protection.

HuntingHappiness · 21/11/2022 10:52

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 21/11/2022 09:54

I didn't realise people were still testing. Just treat it like any illness, if you feel ill cancel stuff and stay home, if you don't carry on as usual

Op is being responsible. She can hardly rock up to a hospital appointment where, you know, vulnerable people are likely to be.

Thank you OP.

CousinKrispy · 21/11/2022 10:52

I'm so sorry, how frustrating! I hope you feel better soon.

HuntingHappiness · 21/11/2022 10:53

Sorry, MN is being slow to update for me today @SingMeToSIeep I see you are also CEV. I hope you make a speedy recovery and don’t feel poorly for too long Flowers

Have they?

All the international evidence shows them working, and raw data snapshots (ie 'it was still bad in Scotland' ) are not useful, as confounders have not been removed. It's a very persistent bit of bad science on social media, unfortunately.

I think possibly the vaccines are exacerbating the situation. Most people I know who are triple vaxxed are suffering badly whereas for the unvaxxed it's a mild cold - mine was a headache for five days only.

I'm quadruple vaccinated and I've been fine the two times I had it (barely registered on the test the first time). Your anecdotal evidence is not valid evidence.

SingMeToSIeep · 21/11/2022 10:59

Get well soon.

I wonder why some people get it so much and others avoid it completely. It's so odd. Must be something genetic.

Thanks for the get well wishes!

I get it so often because I'm immunosuppressed - DH has only had it three times and DD twice, despite us all being in close contact every time I've had it.

That is what I am seeing in my friend group. The jabbed ones all seem to get it multiple times while the unjabbed have had it once at most.

Sympathy....and get well soon. It's pants.

I've had six jabs. We all know they don't stop you catching covid but thankfully they do seem to keep the worst illness at bay. I know of three people with my condition, and on the same meds, who caught Covid prior to vaccines and didn't make it.

If you're immunosuppressed you don't necessarily mount a good immune response from vaccinations but as my consultant says, anything is better than nothing!

Yes. Not the first time you've been told this, either.

Mask mandates existed in the various constituent countries of the UK until earlier this year. They didn't prevent Omicron from ripping through the population and nor did the parts of the UK that retained them longer do any better than those that didn't. England and Scotland is a useful case study here and, because of the culturally specific factor that is Partygate, the most relevant evidence.

Nobody who thinks mask mandates, as distinct from the whole population being willing and able to wear good quality masks, is ever able to explain why this was the case. Hence the vague attempts to claim it isn't relevant. Because it's inconvenient.

Yes I am interested in this too. I'm hesitant to say this as I know it won't be helpful for OP to hear right now, but I've never had it and neither has my husband. I have one parent who's had it a few times, and one who's never had it despite being around covid positive people multiple times. The same is true for my husband's parents. My husband has also had several occasions now where he's been in close-ish, prolonged contact with a covid-positive person and still has never had it (his work requires he tests regularly).

I hope they can figure out why some people are more prone and others seem immune, as this surely would help develop treatments?

The reverse is true if you bother to look at the statistics. Anecdotes are not evidence and lies are dangerous, putting others in danger.

endofthelinefinally · 21/11/2022 11:05

I am immunosuppressed and have had 5 vaccinations and had covid once. I was lucky that I had a short illness and it wasn't severe.
Now it looks as if a new strain is coming out of China.
In the end I don't know if we can keep on testing, isolating, vaccinating. It just goes on and on.

That's if you don't have symptoms, and I do. Also I test weekly anyway before I inject immunosuppressant medication.

Sympathy op....seven times? That's grim, hope you feel better soon. My son has just tested positive for the fifth time and feels rotten with it. I'm currently trying to avoid him in the house as I have two hospital appointments this week that I really , really don't want to miss.
