Was this a coincidence?

NC as I've discussed this with other people in RL.

Not really a AIBU but wanted to know people's thoughts as it's been playing on my mind.

A few nights ago I was in my parents car. We broke down because we ran out of petrol. My DM and me got out to push the car but for some reason it wouldn't move. I kept looking behind me as it was dark and I was worried about cars overtaking us. Anyway, 1 man stopped in front of parents car and parked. He got out. Turns out the man that stopped was a guy that I had to get the police involved with because he was harassing me. Only went on 6 dates with the guy. He scared me and also followed me one time. I told tge guy back then I would take it further with the police if he didn't leave me alone. He then left me alone. That was 3 years ago.

Haven't seen him since. A few months back I saw he had been looking at my Linkedin profile. Didn't realise he was on there so I blocked him.

And then this happened a few nights ago. Is this a coincidence or did he see me whilst driving past or when i kept looking behind and thought this was an opportunity? My parents had not met him before so didn't know him. I walked off as soon as I saw him and called my DP as was feeling shaken up.

I do feel shaken up.

Is there any chance he's been following you OP?

I'm not sure, I don't think so. However it could be a coincidence he was coming that way when we broke down but did he stop to just help and it was chance it was me or drove past saw it was me and decide to stop instead of keep driving.

Or am I being paranoid?

Well I'd like to think it was just a coincidence. Did you break down near to where he lives or around the place he works etc?

Keep an eye out for a bit but try not to worry too much.

Well he lives 5 mins from my parents and we broke down not far from my parents house so makes sense he would drive down the road we broke down on.

I just wonder if he realised it was me when he drove past and thought " yep I can look like a good person" or something I don't know the man creeps me out, although he comes across so charming to others.

Mate, no not a coincidence. What person knowing that you have already been to the cops would stop?

Did he already have petrol in a can for you?

Was your mum surprised that you ran out of petrol or should there have been enough in the tank? Did he have petrol in a can? Sounds very dodgy to me, especially as he was only looking at your LinkedIn profile recently.

They said the car said 50 miles in the tank and then when it gets to that point you don't know what's left. We had been to a funeral that day so it's possible my parents had forgot to fill up

I'd say coincidence. If he was tracking or following you surely he would follow your car. However I would double check everything on so.me and phone.

If he hasn’t bothered you for 3 years and lives near your parents I would put it down to coincidence.

But keep your eyes and ears open and tell your dp about anything dodgy (did you tell him the creepy guy had been on your LinkedIn profile?). I know how you feel OP - I had a stalker ex years back which culminated in a nasty situation and you never forget that fear. I had to use a company he worked for a few years ago and had my bank account cleaned out - I got it back but I convinced myself he had something to do with it although I’ve no idea if he still works for them.

No the fear was horrible. Its so un nerving.

Gosh this was creepy to read! Can’t imagine how it must have felt to have faced him today! It is most likely a coincidence, but narrowed by the fact he lives near your parents. Did he say anything to you? As other have said, keep an eye out around you.

No he didn't say anything to me. I walked off and stood far away before he even had a chance. He hadn't met my parents before but likely he would of seen them on my social media accounts when we were Facebook friends when we dated.

Sounds like a movie 🙈 but could have been coincidence!
