To think that alcohol ban in Qatar shouldn’t be a shock

The Newspapers are reporting that alcohol will not be served in stadiums during the World Cup.

I don’t understand the uproar: it’s a Muslim country: if you go there you shouldn’t expect to be drinking. Visitors have a choice of whether to visit or not, and Qatar are quite right to not want lots of drunks causing mayhem.

There are many many issues with hosting the World Cup in Qatar: but I don’t think this is a big one

Yep how narrow minded people expecting what was agreed.

Justanotherlurker · 19/11/2022 10:17

Some people seem to be amazed that the whole world isn't like the UK or Benidorm.

Your trying to project a situation that isn't there. The critical thinking is severely lacking in your post.

When Brazil hosted and had a law that banned beer sales at stadiums to curb violence, FIFA made them create an exemption if they wanted to secure the bid

In fairness and for all we know FIFA may have done the same, but nothing's going to stop Qatar doing exactly what they want in the full knowledge that little can be done about it

Rightly or wrongly, contracts agreed with "outsiders" are viewed very differently to those created among arab nations themselves, and with so much already sold off to Qatar there's absolutely no chance of them changing their minds unless it suits

WeAreAllLionesses · 19/11/2022 10:33

You've spectacularly missed the point of what they have done now bearing in mind they've had over a decade to make these decisions.

Some people seem to be amazed that the whole world isn't like the UK or Benidorm.

Not that many years ago, I was on a coach out of the airport in Tunisia and people seemed amazed when we passed an open air temple with people praying in it.

It's the basis of the "Peter Kay on holiday" routines isn't it? Garlic bread and chocolate finglez. It would be funnier if it wasn't quite a depressing statement about the stupidity and narrow mindedness of more than a few people.

I don't understand the point you're trying to make?

Againstmachine · 20/11/2022 18:15

Well I hope those enjoyed there first game without beer, and before you start about it being a Muslim country etc, it's funny those in corporate can have as much as they wish, bunch of two faced pricks.

SuspiciousHedgehog · 21/11/2022 08:39

Voted YANBU on the alcohol issue, BUT this info should have been disseminated BEFORE taking fan's money.

It's the concentration camp accommodation that's shocked me.
You couldn't pay me to go, especially as I am not allowed my vape. Big tobacco is clearly still king there.

Godforsaken dust bowl. Embarrassing

💯

Though I'd ban drinks being available during a match.
Before, after and during the interval.
Drinkers up and down to the bar then the loo.
They don't care who they disturb. It drives me bonkers, selfish people disturbing everyone who is there for the match

If you can drink in your seat, as we do, it's not an issue. Also it's not the theatre, people are up and down all the time at matches. I've only ever seen fisticuffs when an away fan is too exuberant anywhere but the away end.

Have you ever been to a match?

To all the 'well what on earth do you expect - it's a muslim country' people.

On top of the clear and logical points already made about the last minute nature of the change, the breach of the original agreement, and the face that booze will be available for rich people in boxes...there's also this:

The legalised drinks industry in Qatar is massive. Not only can you drink in hotels, but the hotels are all kitted out with sky bars, irish pubs, wine bars, cocktail bars and multiple nightclubs per hotel. It's not like sitting in the Watford Premier Inn bar sipping a gordons + schwepps watching news24 on mute. There are DJs and 'ladies go free' nights and themed parties etc. You can also buy booze from licensed outlets to drink at home.

Tell me about it, the ignorance is killing me!
