To phantom posts or am I going insane

I've just been on a thread posted by someone who is finding it hard getting over the fact their partner had decided to end their marriage a few months ago. As I was nearing the end of reading the posts, one appeared by someone called @debra11 which said something like 'I was so glad I got my boyfriend back after 6 months with the help of Dr....' then went onto give website name and phone number of some ridiculous website where you contact them and they put a spell on you and you get your ex back.

I quickly posted a comment saying how sick it was to prey on the vulnerable with such a scam.

After posting I scrolled back to have a proper look as I was going to (1) report the post and (2l have a quick Google to see what the actual scam was but the post had completely disappeared. Not deleted or withdrawn by MN, but simply just not there. All there is my post calling them sick!

Am I going insane? Did I actually see it? Anyone else come across anything like this?

Did you WATCH the thread? Or post on it? If you did, it will be in your 'watched threads.' Even if it's been deleted.

Dontbelieveawordofit · 17/11/2022 23:22

Yeah, I'm watching cos I commented but the @debra11 post has completely just disappeared. No usual 'this post has been deleted because...'. The message is simply not there.
It stood out to begin with because it was all in bold.
I seriously must be going crazy

For clarification, the thread had not been deleted, just that one post/comment from @debra11

Oh well maybe her one post was reported form being against the rules? Can you put the link to the thread?

Dontbelieveawordofit · 17/11/2022 23:31

But if that happened there'd be a message from MN saying 'this has been deleted because', wouldn't there?

@Dontbelieveawordofit
I saw your comment! I scrolled back but there was no comment deleted by MNHQ
I thought it was weird but maybe you had read it on a different thread

Dontbelieveawordofit · 17/11/2022 23:36

No, I commented on it as soon as I read it. It was definitely that thread. it was too specific about getting an ex to come back to you after 6 months and the only other thing I've read or commented on in last hour or so is about benefits and COL.
And I've searched the user name and there are no results whatsoever on any threads

Do you think it could have been an advert? They seem to pick up on the topic of conversation and disappear/rotate to the next ad etc when you scroll away.

DozyFox · 17/11/2022 23:43

I've seen the exact type of comment you mean OP with the doctor thing, but haven't seen the vanishing thing. Strange!

Dontbelieveawordofit · 17/11/2022 23:52

I can't say for definite it wasnt an ad but it looked exactly like an ordinary post, not like a pop up ad or anything. It had the username at top like a normal post. The only thing different was it was all in bold

OP posts:
BosaNova · 18/11/2022 00:09

It happened before on some threads

Squiff70 · 18/11/2022 04:37

I'm absolutely certain I've seen some posts vanish without trace. No message from MNHQ, nothing.

WeWereInParis · 18/11/2022 05:30

This happens to me on the app. They disappear behind adverts. If I bookmark a post just above an advert, then go into the thread again, often the missing post is there because the advert has moved further down.

I looked for it also as I couldn’t understand what you were referring to.

Sindonym · 18/11/2022 05:36

That’s weird. Perhaps Debra has cast a spell on us all after her telling off.

Westfacing · 18/11/2022 05:51

Some years back something similar happened on Gransnet. A few of us commented on a post, others then said what are you on about. GNHQ said there was no record of said post. Strange things happen!

This happens to me all the time too on the app!

Dontbelieveawordofit · 18/11/2022 15:52

Thank you for believing me! Honestly thought I was going loopy. Everybody who read my post must think I was on the pop or something (wasn't, promise)

Haffiana · 18/11/2022 15:56

Post about this in Site Stuff. You may get an explanation.

Dontbelieveawordofit · 18/11/2022 16:44

Thanks for suggesting that @Haffiana. I've has a reply as per below - reassuring that I wasn't imagining it. I've asked for my random post to be removed too

DawnMumsnet · Today 16:29

Hi @Dontbelieveawordofit - thanks for asking about this. We think the post you saw was one of many posted by a dodgy spammer. In such cases we sometimes hit the button to completely zap all posts, which is why it would have disappeared completely from the thread.

Sorry if you thought you were going mad. Would you like us to remove your post from the thread, as it's referring to the now invisible post?
