Awful school photos

Dcs have had their school photos taken, every year they are awful. This year they are worse, they are always taken at a bad angle and I've taken better pictures of them myself!

Dh thinks we should buy them (the proofs are online) but AIBU to say no this year? I could take a photo of them in their school uniforms and frame it (and I might actually like it!!).

No don’t buy them. DD’s are always terrible, I just take a photo of her in her uniform and stick them in a frame for family. They’re so bloody expensive also for a photo where Dd looks like she’s about to cry or throw up.

PumpkinDart · 16/11/2022 13:44

I mean you don't get to override your DH but I personally wouldn't bother buying them every year if they're crap.

Youdoyoutoday · 16/11/2022 13:45

Yep!! I hear you!!

My DS looks drunk in his photos! They're awful!!

Theunamedcat · 16/11/2022 13:46

Yanbu I've bought mine this year but tbh it's not good vast improvement on last years but still not good fortunately the primary took a second picture I posted both on Facebook saying they looked like different children it really did look like two seperate children! But secondary just took one vaguely good one

ofwarren · 16/11/2022 13:46

The ones of my DC are dreadful too.
I bought the ones from reception class but no others.
They are so dark. I could definitely take better photos myself.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 16/11/2022 13:46

I always thought school photos were a massive rip off. What do you even do with 12 passport size pics of your child? You can’t even use them on their passport because they are taken at an angle and smiling.
I bought reception and year 6, just for a record, but I prefer my own first and last day pictures

OrangePomander · 16/11/2022 13:46

I’m not buying them this year for the same reason, though bizarrely I feel I should for the gps.

Zampa · 16/11/2022 13:46

Ah, rubbish school photos are a rite of passage aren't they? It's part of their beauty.

They are expensive so obviously don't buy them if you don't want them or can't afford them.

queenofthewild · 16/11/2022 13:47

Outing myself entirely to anyone who knows me.

DS had a weird hump in his reception class photo.

It was clear they had shoved his jumper over the back of the chair to stop him wriggling and then badly photoshopped out the angular shape it left in his clothes.

Yes. I own the awful photo.

ShepherdMoons · 16/11/2022 13:50

I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling this way, ours is terrible this year.

Yes they are dark photographs, dd looks about 2 stone heavier than she actually is and her hair is weirdly pressed down on her forehead (possibly teacher combing it 'neatly' pre-photo).

Ds has a weird expression on his face and he'd complained about the bright flash photography before so I imagine that's something to do with it.

Awful!!! And they are extortionately priced!!

I didn't buy it as it was £25 but the group photo was another hilarious photo shop fail. A teachers arm went missing, and several children either shrank or became really tall in this picture. They take group shots of three/four kids and then merge them. It is never to scale!

queenofthewild · 16/11/2022 13:55

@lndnbrdge91 I feel like your child may have been in DS's Y1 class.

The teacher lost an arm. The little girl who was too tiny to find any school uniform to fit ended up being the tallest child in the class.

ClareBlue · 16/11/2022 13:55

They are bad and expensive, but probably the only photo of all the year together which they love looking at in years to come. But definitely from a time when people generally didn't have cameras or digital photography. No doubt teacher could just take a group photo and parents take individual ones. Put group online and pay school a for a print. Job done.

RainbowsMoonbeams · 16/11/2022 13:56

I don’t buy them if they are awful.

Why reward crap photography by paying for it? It’s not cheap.

pinheadlarry · 16/11/2022 13:57

Grr dds school told me the wrong day for photo day
I did her hair all pretty expecting a nice photo
But they took the photo on a different day when her hair was messy, she still looked cute though so i bought it lolD

brighterthanthemoon · 16/11/2022 13:57

They absolutely shouldn't photoshop them. The whole joy is it is a snapshot of them at school.

singleone · 16/11/2022 13:58

When my sister showed me DN school picture I cried laughing it was that bad! He's such a beautiful boy it was absolutely hilarious how awful the picture was.
I've no idea what the photographer was thinking, it's a face I've never seen him pull before! And no my sister didn't buy it

44PumpLane · 16/11/2022 13:59

I've bought the digital copy of each of my twins separately and then a third shot of them together this year.....all three pics are pretty awful and it cost me £45 to have them on a CD (they wouldn't just email them to me which is irritating)!

I've decided to buy a photo backdrop from Amazon for £20 ND from now on just do my own!!!

The ones from school invariably their hair is messed up by the time their picture is taken, sometimes their clothes aren't on properly (collar skewed or one side tucked in and one side hanging out).....I honestly feel I could do a better job!!

Tomadad · 16/11/2022 14:01

Have you ever considered it might not be the pictures?

Jules912 · 16/11/2022 14:01

Tell the school, ours got a new photographer for the last couple of years and he's actually really good. DD's hair was a bit messy in this years as she was off for the original date and I lost track of when the catch up was but it actually makes it look more natural.

bloomtoperish · 16/11/2022 14:02

Just received m

bloomtoperish · 16/11/2022 14:03

Argh posted too soon... Just received the school photos for my son in reception, bloody awful but I b

Jexi · 16/11/2022 14:05

YANBU. I think I've only bought the very first and last ones and even then it was the basic package. Far too overpriced.

Our DC had there's last week. DS came home complaining.. "Mum they made me hug her.." 🤣

Hillarious · 16/11/2022 14:05

The fact that they're so awful is the reason why you have to buy them.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 16/11/2022 14:06

DDs secondary school changed from a local photographer to a chain a few years ago. They've been awful since the change. I've only bought one this year as it's her last ever school photo.

The year group photo was ridiculous. There were too many for one shot so its been photoshopped to make them look like one group. DD is barely 5ft in real life but has been stretched and 'lifted' in to the air. She is now at the back with the 6ft boys in her year. Fucking hilarious 😂
