ivykaty44 · 16/11/2022 13:12

The doctor has said that Im to heavy, Im within the range at 24.8 but that I should lose 6 kilo, so going from 72 to 66kg.

I was weighed fully clothed, I take thyroxine and have inhalers, no other health conditions.

I will work on this but

aibu to think that it's the NHS guide line and i'm within them?

Too heavy for what?

Were you seeing the GP for something that could be impacted by your weight? Maybe that's what s/he meant?

workshy46 · 16/11/2022 13:14

What height are you ? Also depends on where you carry it. My friend was told to lose two stone and I doubt her BMI is that high but she carries it all around the middle/face neck so suspect that was the reason

ChickpeaPie · 16/11/2022 13:15

Your BMI is normal, I’d be inclined to ignore it. However at BMI 24 personally I’m overweight as I have a small frame so depends on you.
Why did they weigh you?

luxxlisbon · 16/11/2022 13:18

24.8 is within the normal range by only 0.1 which is a tiny amount. I think he was just drawing your attention to that, if you gained only a lb or 2 you would be in the overweight category.

Obviously BMI is a guide and it still depends on your weight distribution, activity level, muscle etc but you aren’t comfortably within the normal range when it’s taken at face value.

Dixiechickonhols · 16/11/2022 13:22

BMI recommendation for some ethnic groups is 23 or less.
If you aren’t sure why they said it can you make a telephone appointment or speak to nurse to clarify. It might be related to medication etc. Your morning weight undressed could be 1-2kg lighter.

strawberryandcreams · 16/11/2022 13:23

Are you 5ft 7 op? To give you 24.8?

For context I'm 24.2
I'm 5ft 3 and weigh 62kilos.
I am very active and lift a lot of weights.

I'm surprised the doctor said that but do you think losing a couple of kg will help? Or are you happy as you are?
BMI doesn't take in a lot of factors and only you know that yourself.

I was 62kg years ago before I did any exercise and I knew it. And didn't like it at all. Got down to 57. Hard to maintain. Now I exercise a lot and my body shape has changed. I know 62 is a healthy weight for me. Any more and it starts tipping over

Or are you happy as you are?

its made me think I need to do something

I'm active but more cardio, so looking at weights stuff to see what happens

Fairyliz · 16/11/2022 13:29

Sounds like currently you are within the acceptable range but if you gain a few pounds you will go into the overweight category.
Christmas is coming up, lots of us eat and drink too much then and so it’s easy to put in a few pounds. Do you think this is why he mentioned it?

Kikidouloveme · 16/11/2022 13:29

Sounds unusual for a white person to be told too heavy at less than 25bmi even by 0.1 I expected that you were of Asian origin for example as PP said some ethnicities risk of diabetes start at a lower bmi so need to be under 23bmi.

OP you need to ask him or her what they meant as for a follow up to clarify his comment.

Maybe its for your breathing issues? Extra weight to carry around is never a good idea. 6Kg isnt much

hellosunshineagainxxx · 16/11/2022 13:31

Bizarre when I see these, I'm obese and have never been told to lose weight by a health care professional

BMI of 29 here, also never been told to lose weight.

SafeMove · 16/11/2022 13:34

I was 69kg and told to try get down to between 59-62kg for a hysterectomy. I still don't know why that specific range. Are you due surgery?

EndlessRain · 16/11/2022 13:36

Do yu carry it around your stomach? Guidance is shifting more towards waist measurements now isn't it?

ivykaty44 · 16/11/2022 13:37

Are you due surgery? no

Well OP, lots of suggestions have been made and noone really knows. So short of asking the Doctor why s/he said it noone on here can really tell you.

This. While nobody likes to be told they need to lose weight, and ti is a sensitive matter, the doctor is not saying it to be deliberately offensive. Carrying extra kilos (even if that doesn't put you in the overweight category) can exacerbate certain conditions. It's not about 'are you happy as you are', it's about what is good for you.
6kg is doable with a good diet and plenty of exercise. You've got this OP.

TheOrigRights · 16/11/2022 13:45

Did the GP actually state you were within the guidelines and then go on to say you need to lose weight, or do you think they read the chart wrong?

Zippedydoo123 · 16/11/2022 13:46

I have annual blood test due to bp meds. When I get the annual phone call as my weight is 27 bmi even though my bp is always fine the doctor always mentions tnis.

He has never met me due to being a new doctor.I don't smoke hardly ever drink and eat healthily. If he saw me in the flesh I am just bitflabby around the tummy that is all. Which post meno can be common. I think he just mentions it to be thorough.

PotentiallyPolly · 16/11/2022 13:47

Muscle weighs more than fat, if you build more muscle with exercise you’re going to get heavier not lighter. But there’s absolutely nothing wrong with weighing more when it’s not fat.

Dixiechickonhols · 16/11/2022 13:48

If you are coming up blank all you can do is ask.
I had opposite I’ve just gone over into overweight and am trying to lose it to get back to 24. Something I mentioned and gp just said it’s much of a muchness 24.9 v 25.1 won’t be making a difference.
Frame matters. I’m 5ft 8 big frame - big wrists, hands, feet. Got to bmi 23 and looked awful. So I sit best near top end bmi but do try and keep to right side for 25.

MY GP recommended that I try to lose some weight, as although I'm within the acceptable range (72kg at 5'8"), I carry fat around my stomach. I'm also white and Scottish (of Eastern European descent on one side - grandfather).

I'm relatively fit and strong - I play team sports, lift weights and do a bit of cardio (running a couple of times a week) - but I agreed that my diet could do with some work. I'm on the waiting list for a radical hysterectomy in 2023 (hopefully), so I'd like to be in the best health I can be in advance.

BMI is a range - I'm currently at the top end and it wouldn't take a lot to tip me over, especially because I like wine and food.

I think medical professionals advising (advising, not dictating) you on how best to look after your body is a good thing.

6kg is a stone - it's quite a lot!
