ivykaty44 · 16/11/2022 13:12

The doctor has said that Im to heavy, Im within the range at 24.8 but that I should lose 6 kilo, so going from 72 to 66kg.

I was weighed fully clothed, I take thyroxine and have inhalers, no other health conditions.

I will work on this but

aibu to think that it's the NHS guide line and i'm within them?

What treatment is being prevented?
By the fact you are overweight? What are you asking for? Why were you there?
Because in most cases if they advise you to lose weight it shouldn't stop them treating you there and then.

FlowerArranger · 16/11/2022 17:07

To all those asking why should she lose weight...... why bother if she is still within normal range.... etc.

it is so much easier to lose weight before the menopause. Many women gain weight during the menopause and most struggle to lose it.

And there's the risk of osteopenia and osteoporosis which blights the lives of so many older women.

Look around you and see all those women in their 60s and upwards - out of breath and struggling to walk. This could be you in years to come.

Eating healthily and exercising can counteract so many problems that come with aging.

Jenasaurus · 16/11/2022 17:17

Im 5ft 4 and bmi 25, I have about 2 stone of fat on my stomach to lose as a tiny frame, so wont probably be healthy (as in waist measurement and diabetes) until im 8stone 7. My friend is 5ft BMI of 27 with a waist of 26 inches and looks amazing. I think where the weight is situated is linked to health risks, my waist measurements were 41 when I weighed 14 stone 4 and now im 10 stone 7 they are 36 which is still 4-6 inches too big (also i am diabetic with high cholesterol)

this is correct, at 57 the weight in my middle is refusing to shift, it is going but very slowly, meanwhile my legs look like they belong to a 10 year old :)

imbacktoshowyoumydress · 16/11/2022 17:33

Doesn't it depend where weight is carried?

FlowerArranger · 16/11/2022 17:44

Doesn't it depend where weight is carried?

Not sure, but it definitely depends on the type of weight, i.e. fat versus muscle.

I now weigh about 10 lb more than I used to, before I started to gain weight during the menopause. However, the extra pounds are all muscle - thank you, Caroline Girvan!! - and all my old, pre-weight-gain clothes fit.

I'm lean, I have muscles...... and no more bingo wings. What's more, in my mid-50s a bone scan showed signs of osteopenia. This has not got worse in the 10 years since - in fact it seems to have improved.

My only regret is not having changed gears when I was in my 30s.

You certainly don't look overweight. Maybe a couple of extra pounds on your thighs?

Try this - 10 minutes a day but VERY effective:

I credit my skiers' legs to this workout!

Your belly's definitely smaller than your friends Wink

You look great OP.

OnlyFannys · 16/11/2022 18:05

You look fab op, you dont look like you need to lose any weight at all

Fireballxl5 · 16/11/2022 18:05

@ivykaty44 you look fine in that photo.
I would just continue to cut out snacks and wear light clothes at the next weigh in.

Anonymouseposter · 16/11/2022 18:13

You aren’t overweight. I would ignore him. Did he just look at your weight without looking at your height and BMI.?

Looks fine to me. I'm confused.

Please answer my question re what treatment the GP denied you because of your weight?

Sunnysideup999 · 16/11/2022 18:59

I am a similar weight and height although it fluctuates a lot - I am lighter in the morning (can weigh 68 kg in the am and by evening after a big meal I can weigh 70.5 kg.
Esp with heavy winter clothes on.
I’ve a history of disordered eating so if I doctor weighted me when I’m heavy and advised me to loose weight I’d wonder why too. I’d also find it a bit triggering

ivykaty44 · 16/11/2022 19:57

For all those asking what my height to waist ratio is, the sewing box is in the attic and I’ve not got up there to get it down - so no idea what my waist measurement is yet.

I’ll measure in the next couple of days

i shall continue eating sensible and avoid snacks, keep at the gym and cycling. See if I can get nearer 66kg than 72kg

no treatment has been denied to me for any reason

What was the context of the GP making that statement OP? Did he just look at you and tell you to lose 6kg or was it in reference to a particular treatment or symptom?

Rainbowsandbutterflies1990 · 16/11/2022 20:09

I'm going to tell my doctor at my asthma review next week I'm not going to be weighted . I have left diet culture after being in that mindset since early teens
. It's cause a terrible relationship with food including binge eating episodes and I have put on and took off weight my whole life. For first time after learning and doing initiative eating I can now say im finally am starting to have healthy relationship with food. I am classed as very overnight and i am actually loosing weight but its definitely not want I'm trying to do. It's just consequence of no longer binging and restricting .

Zanatdy · 16/11/2022 20:13

I always check TDEE to see what my ideal weight should be. It’s a range, so obviously it varies. I’m not overweight at all, but carry weight on my stomach and when I was near top of my weight range my stomach measurement showed I was at risk of health issues. I lost 24lbs so was then at lower end of weight. Although I wasn’t overweight to start with I felt a lot better with some weight off, and was much fitter

ivykaty44 · 16/11/2022 20:13

What was the context of the GP making that statement OP?

literally in reference to the scales and the weight I am

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 16/11/2022 20:17

Maybe a couple of extra pounds on your thighs?

im regularly cycling, and presently averaging 60 miles per week, my legs have my strongest muscles consequently and its my top half that is weak and needs extra work

OP posts:
FlowerArranger · 16/11/2022 20:26

Ah so it's muscles rather than fat - you're good!!!

FlowerArranger · 16/11/2022 20:27

Try Caroline Girvan for working on the upper half
