Worried sick.....Poland

I'm so worried about this escalation with the missiles landing in Poland. Petrified in fact. Can anyone talk me down?. I'm so scared right now....

OP I think you can breathe a sigh of relief. Jens Stoltenberg, the Polish PM, Russia and the US are all saying it was an accident and that the missile was Ukrainian. NATO see no need to trigger article 4, never mind 5, and no planning by Russia to attack NATO members.

Phew, let's all calm down now and have a nice 🍵

I understand OP - it's something I have been very scared of in the past but your post & the replies have helped put my mind at rest

Thank you. I'm glad your mind is more at rest. Mine is too. So many good calm responses on here.

Could people stop being so harsh towards the OP? She was worried, she asked a question, and when the answer was reassuring she said thank you and stopped worrying. That’s not scaremongering or being ridiculous.

Thank you. Smile

Me too @lunathestral and @TarasHarp55 the whole thread had calmed me down. I like to think I'm pretty laid back, but things like this, it just sends a shudder down your spine. I also want to thank everyone for the calm measured responses Flowers

Without being ageist on here, I think it's easier for older people to be at ease, the ones who lived through the cold War era to be more relaxed about the threat of nuclear war since Russia invaded Ukraine, as we've seen all the dick waving sabre ratting before.

Like many others, I don't think Poland will initiate Article 4, let alone 5, and even if they did, it does not mean nuclear.

A polish farm would not be a target for Russia , it looks like a stray missile or two, no condolence to the people that died as a result , but all parties seem to accept it was unintentional.

If I'm honest, I'm seeing positive reactions, nations seem to be talking.

OP, I wouldn't worry, I don't see this escalating it, if anything hopefully some de-escalation.

This. It was a worry when it was first reported as yes, an attack on a NATO member would escalate things.

however today all parties have been calm, said it wasn’t deliberate, and have de-escalated (very sensibly).

also, as other posters have said, whilst there is a risk of things escalating and that becoming nuclear, most people believe the chances of that are very slim. There may be posturing and noise but no-one (and I include Russia in that) wants to use nuclear weapons.

it’s hard, but try not to worry.

It isn't self absorbed at all to have a fear, regardless of what the fear is. Fear can't always be justified or rational.

No but you can start by finding good news sources which give you good answers rather than looking at ridiculous headlines and drama on the Internet.

Let me put it this way. If we were likely to be going down that route from the event in Poland last night, you'd have known about it before you started the thread this morning.

There would have been emergency broadcasts / interviews / analysis or someone would have already dumped a missile.

By 9am the tone was pretty flat and measured.

Learn to read the room.

The world is not Hollywood. These things are inevitably much more boring and dull in most cases. Cos politics.

These type of threads are remarkably self indulgent and lacking in trying to find out what's actually happening. It's seeking the attention of others rather than either addressing extreme anxiety or finding out the truth or having a real desire to.

As for being scared about Poland. Why weren't you bothered by the invasion itself?! 9 months in, despite the panic early on, the sky still hasn't fallen in. Learn from this.

You've got it wrong. I didn't know anything about it till this morning. I don't watch the news. It came up on a social media account. What makes you think I wasn't bothered by the invasion itself? ahh right you're assuming. But never mind, thanks for your concern. You probably have never suffered severe anxiety, there really was no need for your post, I was asking for reassurance, not a telling off.

Yes, I did have a nasty moment on Tuesday. It quite put me off my prosecco when I heard the news but the media were bigging it up bigtime.Listen to the world service or Radio 4 for reasonable analysis.I was a child who was made to watch horrible films by my father about nuclear war in the seventies to educate me and I was often afraid during times of international crisis.I have sometimes wished I was born in previous times as it feels like an abomination to have these vile weapons around. But then I might have died from a cold or a cut finger or plague so you lose all the time anyway. The thing is I am afraid that all the while nuclear weapons exist someone might use them and Putin has quite a deep fear of failure and I also think covid and isolation compounded his issues. He could use nuclear weapons or he could provoke a stupid accident with careless bombardment.People are ageist towards Biden which I find unacceptable, but one needs to be thankful that he is the POTUS.
Also, I know Mumsnetters think Zelensky is a little hunk but he would love to provoke an all out war for his ego- remember he was an actor and he likes to pose. There is more to this war than evil Putin and brave Ukraine.Read some history. It will not cure the fear but it may help.Join CND, do something, do a youtbe meditation for peace in Ukraine.Pray.Stop reading the Mail.Unfortunately we have little control over this and I do still feel quite ill with fear at times and anger but we can only do what we can.

CAJIE · 17/11/2022 21:21

That does not mean a war could not happen. In fact it is more likely now but lets hope not.

CAJIE · 17/11/2022 21:23

Also a limiited exchange would still kill vast amounts of people.I think people need to educate themselves about nuclear war again. Also some kids think they could go and fight. It ain't Vera Lyn or Foyles War, This is oblivion.
