To ask what planet some Vinted sellers are on?!

Browsing second hand baby clothes. 3 used sleepsuits from a supermarket chain, listed for £5! Do they realise that once you add the postage cost, you may as well buy new?!

I’ve only just started using it but what I don’t get is why favourite an item that is priced at £1?

im selling a lovely party dress my 7yo has outgrown. 8 people have “favourited” it but it’s only priced at a quid. How low a price do you want something for? I’ve just been seeing things j want for my kid and just buying straight out

I'm guessing that they're browsing for a party dress: there are several plausible candidates because it's a classic Vinted category, so they favourite them all before comparing and deciding which to buy.

If I was buying a party dress for my DD and there were five lovely dresses for a quid each it doesn't matter that I could easily afford a fiver: I'd still only buy one of them.

MyPenIsHuge · 16/11/2022 08:19

I got BNIB Bobux school shoes for the kid, £60 in the shop for £30 + postage and fees. Still a great saving for me. I find some more specialist brands can be decently priced even after fees. I buy second hand as much as I can.

poweredbyplants · 16/11/2022 14:42

I tend to avoid buying high street/supermarket clothing on there for this reason. I stick to brands like Blade & Rose, Bonds, DUNS Sweden etc which cost more anyway but also not something I could just pick up with my weekly shop while I was there.

I love Vinted - I buy and sell. I agree that some sellers clearly don't take the postage into account but also some people want things for a ridiculously low price. I only sell decent brands and listed a lovely Boden boys coat which cost me £50 new for £8 (so about £11 when postage added) and people offering me £5 etc. I did sell it at £8. But almost I'm happy to accept low offers if I've had something sitting there for months. I'd rather have something for it than nothing.

My friend absolutely raves about Vinted and kept telling me to go on.

I was underwhelmed to say the least.

You can’t return anything and TBH £10 for a dress that might not fit and I can’t return plus postage, I’d rather go to a charity shop and be able to try it on, or go to New Look and pay twice the price

On apps like Vinted. Why would you want to return? At who's expense?

pishkashante · 16/11/2022 19:14

I sell quite a bit on eBay and I’m lazy, so taking pictures, packing items, going to post office takes energy. I wouldn’t sell unless I was making at least £10 profit.

Lulanna · 16/11/2022 19:26

Love Vinted. I've had quite a few dresses, mainly for work, new with all tags, one was £4, just over £8 with postage and fees, label said £59.99. Real bargains.

I love a bargain but also like the reuse message. We all have too much stuff and too much waste.

Pleiades2020 · 16/11/2022 20:06

Love a good Vinted thread! It's true some sellers have way too high prices for the items. But also there are some absolute bargains. The bargains sell very quickly so it's best to save searches and check them regularly. Once they're sold they don't appear. I've sold a few of the skirts back at £5 each but but all in good condition and branded. They all sold within a week or two.

The fee is essentially Vinted's cut plus insurance for any issues. Ebay charge a percentage to the seller.

I favourite stuff in order to bookmark. Eg. I only need one pair of jeans (rather than loads even if they are really cheap) so I favourite in order to come back and compare with something else I've found. If I bought everything that was a bargain I would have an even bigger pile of stuff to sell on Vinted 😄

@User365 Mars? Jupiter? Venus?

Piglet89 · 22/11/2022 22:29

I got a great wee Jojo wet suit for my son from Vinted for a steal; very happy with that.

Has to be Uranus surely? 🪐

bakebeans · 23/11/2022 15:59

I joined Vinted and honestly don't know why I bothered. I put a pair of brand new men's branded sports trainers on with tags unworn for less than half the price and people were sending me offers of £2. They were £50 new and I was only asking for £20. I've closed my account now!

Cornishmarketingtithead · 23/11/2022 16:02

I'm 35. And I've been on Vinted looking for clothes I wore at Uni. Just to reminisce over (No intention to buy)

One of them is a Roxy hoody from 2004. I found it on Vinted - the seller wanted £35 😂

I only searched for it to reminisce and ask my DH if he remembered it. Had no intention to buy. Couldn't believe the price AND IT WAS VISIBLY DIRTY.

At least wash it before taking pics...

BertieBotts · 23/11/2022 16:09

Postage is quite cheap if people send it as a large letter 2nd class, which you can do for most baby clothes if it's a couple of things. If they don't have that listed as a postage option, send a message.

I would avoid looking at the front page though, that just shows you whatever is newly listed. I go to the section of whatever I'm looking for by age and sort by price. Or search by brand, colour, keyword etc (e.g. Paw Patrol).

There is LOADS of stuff on there so no need to bother with the overpriced items. I also tend to browse through and stick favourite on anything I like the look of, then go through my favourites to see which sellers have other things I like. Usually, unless I absolutely love it, I won't bother unless I can see 3+ things I want in order to combine postage.

BertieBotts · 23/11/2022 16:14

The other advantage of Large Letter as a seller is that I don't have to make a special trip to the post office or parcel shop. I can just walk to the nearest post box and it is done.

I bought a large pack of plastic A4 mailers on amazon for about a fiver and they have lasted me for ages, I think it worked out about 10p each. This makes it worth it to price stuff at under £5 - it's basically free money for my old stuff, and if nobody buys it after a while I just delete it and donate it instead.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/11/2022 16:25

The postage is definitely the Achilles' heel for cheaper items. Buyers are affronted that it bumps the price up disproportionately, but the seller still has to pay to post the items out - and they don't earn anything from it - so you've instantly got an impasse.

On eBay, you can buy lots of stuff cheaply with free postage, but it's all from massive volume business sellers who have the economy of scale of being able to take huge consignments to the post office - or have a special deal with another carrier - and earn 30p on each one of hundreds, if not thousands.

For an individual with a few items and another main job to have to fit everything in with, it's so difficult. I suppose that's one of the advantages of car boot sales (mixed in with the many, many disadvantages) - that the cash and item can be exchanged instantly and free of charge (apart from the overall pitch fee, of course).

There's a good reason why brick merchants don't do mail order!!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/11/2022 16:31

Have pervs cottoned on to Vinted yet? Might that be the reason for some of the visibly grubby and unwashed used clothes?!

I've seen things listed with the eye-wink code phrase 'cleaned to eBay standards' even when on sale on other platforms! Yeugh.

Catslovepies · 23/11/2022 16:33

Love Vinted. I got a Missoma pendant that's currently on their website at £145 for £15, a Reiss leather jacket for about the same amount, and a real Oodie for £20. You can get nearly new Clarks shoes for £5-10 a pair, and I bought a couple of pairs of Keens boots for around £20 each. I've only had two problems- a pair of £60 boots (worth £250 new) that weren't in as good condition as described. I sent them back, at my own expense admittedly, and got a full refund. And another time some earrings I ordered never arrived and I got a full refund also.

JamMakingWannaBe · 15/11/2022 21:52

I find it strange when a seller lists one boys top, age 9-10 and then the rest of their listing is girls clothes age 5-6. Why one random item in a different sex and size?

Do you have more than one child?
I don't sell on vinted, but with 4 dc I could put up exactly this combination.
I could have 6 clothing sizes if we all got rid of something 😆

FourTeaFallOut · 23/11/2022 17:12

I don't know which planet it is but wherever it is they use enough fragranced laundry detergent to make your eyes water.

OhmygodDont · 23/11/2022 17:19

Sold loads of their most postage seems to be sent via those post in lockers seems to be a free or cheapest option I don’t mind or an evri drop off point.

I always just pick the recommended or similar listings sold for price. I’ve had a few bundles where clearly the buyer wasn’t happy it got changed to a medium parcel but for post it lockers a small needs to be under 0.5kg and by the time I’ve added all the bits and weighed it it’s often like 0.8kg so bumps it up. I don’t know how strict they are but I don’t want the bad review ha.

never sent anything Royal Mail always locker or evri.

Goldi321 · 23/11/2022 17:22

I'll sell stuff for £1/£2. I'm on a mission to declutter my house so am just happy to get rid of stuff. I'm also on mat leave so have time to go and post things (it gets me out of the house!) and even a few pounds can add up and I can then use it on the app to get clothes for my baby.

I figure, by the time you've added on the fee and postage, people won't pay more than a few pounds for a second hand (but new) cheap toiletries set or baby clothes. And I hope people are getting cheap Christmas presents as it's a tough year this year.

I have saved loads of boxes, bags and padded envelopes from online orders or Vinted parcels that have been sent to me and reuse these. It makes me feel good that I am recycling!

AriettyHomily · 23/11/2022 17:23

I'm not prepared to pay 50-80% of full price cost for second hand plus postage. I'd rather just go to the shop. I've sold a load of stuff and price it right and it flies, kids christmas presents sorted just for sorting through the wardrobes. Ski did really well, I had a load of too small North face stuff from years ago, someone else had benefited from an original price £350 down ski jacket for £25.
