If you buy something from a retailer for £15 one day and the next day theyre selling it for £9, would you be pissed? This sort of thing has happened more than once and it feels illegal somehow

I dont really believe its illegal

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 14/11/2022 18:55

Definitely not illegal FFS. Have you never seen half price mince pies on Boxing Day?

can you take the original back and re-buy it?

Funkyslippers · 14/11/2022 18:57

I'd definitely take it back and but it again. I've done it before

Ive already unpackaged and am using said item. Too late to take it back

Buy another one at £9 and then take it back with the receipt for refund of £15.

PuttingDownRoots · 14/11/2022 19:09

Retailers can sell anything for whatever price they want.

Customers decide whether to buy it at that price.

Annoying but thats life

Naughty but genius idea!

Nice one, but I think they may twig because of the date?

girlmom21 · 14/11/2022 19:15

So what would you suggest? They're not allowed to sell anything at a reduced price until 24 hours after the last purchase?

donttellmehesalive · 14/11/2022 19:15

You wouldn't be complaining if they put the price up.

Of course price fluctuates with demand.

If you book a holiday for next summer, the price could fall significantly.

In the past, I've waited too long for price drops and lost out if the item is no longer available.

Can't you just buy a new one for £9 and take the new one back with the old £15 receipt?

LadyMarmaladeAtkins · 14/11/2022 19:19

No I wouldn't be annoyed because I know how commerce works.

caringcarer · 14/11/2022 19:26

A bit annoying but nothing you can do.

Do you set fire to your money for fun?

Of cousse I wouldn't be annoyed that's how shops work.

If the price had gone up the next day would you have gone in and given them the extra money? Of course you wouldn't.

Sometimes the price goes down and that's life next time you may end up with a bargain when you buy something on sale its just the luck of the draw.

Anon778833 · 14/11/2022 19:31

Well, things go up and down even more these days. Have you seen the fluctuations on Amazon??

Idbetternamechange · 14/11/2022 19:34

I was annoyed having bought a load of clothes from a high street store only to get home and discover them half price online THE SAME DAY!!
I returned them to the store the next day only to discover they were now half price in the store. Without batting an eye, I bought them all back. The sales person was unimpressed - I had to ask him if he’d prefer if I’d just order them online.
I did also write to the head office because it’s incredibly unfair that stores have to compete against online with unequal pricing.

girlmom21 · 14/11/2022 19:34

Aaaaand that's not how commerce works

autumnleavesontheground · 14/11/2022 19:34

This happens to me all the time. If unused I return and re buy.

It’s frustrating but I can’t chase offers constantly. I’d never keep up.

Buy another one at £9 and then take it back with the receipt for refund of £15.

Good idea but be careful- some stores have individual barcodes, which can tell you when something was purchased

brighterthanthemoon · 14/11/2022 19:37

It's very risky at this time of year. It's just the chance you take.

Stoic123 · 14/11/2022 19:38

John Lewis is good about this - if the price drops within 35 days of purchse, they will refund the difference.

medicatedgift · 14/11/2022 19:39

That's how business works.

Floatyflip · 14/11/2022 19:43

Depending on the price difference just buy another and return with the original receipt. Job done

Porkypork · 14/11/2022 19:46

A lot of places will honour the difference if you take it back in with your receipt - even if it is used. It's worth a try.

superdupernova · 14/11/2022 19:47

My colleague used to take things back for a refund and then purchase again at the discounted price if it changed quickly after purchase. The employees couldn't care less. Personally I'm too lazy and have already decided it's worth buying at the original price.

username8888 · 14/11/2022 19:10

Nice one, but I think they may twig because of the date?

You take the cheaper item (£9 bought today) back using the receipt for the item bought yesterday at £15.

Although I think receipts are much more itmesed these days so this may not work?
