If you buy something from a retailer for £15 one day and the next day theyre selling it for £9, would you be pissed? This sort of thing has happened more than once and it feels illegal somehow

I dont really believe its illegal

I had this happen, I contacted the shop and they refunded the difference.

Fifthtimelucky · 15/11/2022 08:47

Of course it's annoying when this happens, but it's a risk we always take when buying something, especially at this time of year with Black Friday sales starting up.

Do you buy something when you first see it, or gamble that it will be reduced - and still available - if you wait for a while?

I have sometimes made the wrong decision by buying too early at full price, but I have also sometimes waited, hoping that something would be reduced, and then been too late because they have sold out.

Womencanlift · 15/11/2022 09:22

It is what it is so YABU to be annoyed about it.

If you thought this way about every purchase you would never buy anything as you would always be waiting for the price to go down. You have likely bought something else that was previously more expensive so at that time you ‘won’. It’s all just swings and roundabouts

mamabear715 · 15/11/2022 09:23

Just one of those things..

Floweryflora · 15/11/2022 09:26

sales are quite normal practice in the uk and many other countries. So yes you can buy one day at one price and the next day it goes on sale and price is reduced. Does this not happen in your country?

HairyMcLarie · 15/11/2022 10:06

You obviously thought it was worth the price when you bought it.

I presume you would run to pay them the difference should they increase the price given you think it's unfair the other way round?

It is not 'illegal' to have sales! The retailer just needs to have sold the item at the previously stated price for 28 days. Thats why the likes of furniture shops can have massive sales as they sell at 40% increase for a month then advertise a 40% off sale.

Do you set fire to your money for fun?

@eelieza so what do you propose? Shops never put anything on Sale because people have bought items at the full retail
price?

understanding 'life' is an important skill, not burning money 🙄🙄🙄

Floweryflora · 15/11/2022 10:27

I think that’s a little unfair. The op clearly doesn’t understand the concept of sales, she even suggested it felt illegal to do such a thing, I am guessing she doesn’t come from a country that uses this concept .

op it’s a very common retail concept, shops reduce the price of items down to incentivise sales and footfall; it is not just legal but very common practice in many many western countries,. Pricing is not static for ever. It’s not fixed. It can move up and down. That’s why you’ve seen it a few times.

do you have any one in real life you can chat to about the concept to help you understand it further? Where do you live?

Take it back for a refund and buy it at the lower price. Yabu

CapMarvel · 15/11/2022 10:43

You were happy buying the item at the price at the time. The prices of things fluctuates all the time - why would it be illegal?

eelieza · 15/11/2022 14:04

Uhm. Excuse you?! I come from the UK. I have always lived here. I was just having a moan. I Specified in my SHORT op that I dont really think it's illegal. It was a turn of phrase, a figure of speech! Dont know how you missed it.

YABU.
I might be a little bit annoyed with myself, if it's an item I could have waited to get till it was reduced, but I wouldn't be annoyed with the retailer.m

hulahooper2 · 15/11/2022 14:27

In Canada if the price reduces you just take back your receipt and they refund you the difference, wish it was like that here

Fairislefandango · 15/11/2022 14:35

I don't understand. Are you saying that shops shouldn't ever be allowed to lower the price if anything?! Because if they are allowed to lower prices, then every single time they do so, the price will change from one day to the next. Perhaps you want them to lower them gradually, by 1p per day maybe? Grin

I don't think that's a figure of speech

Needmorelego · 15/11/2022 14:52

Annoying but that's retail.
Throughout the year they will have -
Reduced to clear sales
20% Off Flash Sales
Buy one get one free
3 for 2
Buy one get one half price.
'Special Buys'.
Prices are up and down like yoyos.
(I used to have to change the price labels in my job)

blacksax · 15/11/2022 14:56

I wouldn't be pissed, no.

I might be pissed off though.
