I started my period's when I was 11, terrible cramps and it affected my learning at school, throwing up and passing out.

I have just had a weekend with cramps and feeling like shit, when will it end 😂

I am 37 but was sterilised at 35 and highly resent having periods when there is zero chance of getting pregnant anymore. I started at 11 and I am so done. This week I am having an endometrial ablasion (I think that's how its spelt) and I am hoping that will be the end.

Might be worth looking into? I will be a day patient so in and out in a day.

Another one here - I’m just about to turn 56 and still regular each month. My sister is 59 and the same for her too.
She read that 20% of women over 50 still have bleeds. Just my luck to finally be in the top 20% of something and this is it!

Fairislefandango · 13/11/2022 20:37

I'm with you. I'm 51 and still have regular periods (very heavy in the last few years). No sign of hot flushes etc.

notvirginiawoolf · 13/11/2022 20:39

Had an ablation (47) which has pretty much stopped them for over a year…..... Life Changing best thing I have done.
Good luck @FilthyforFirth

Mariposista · 13/11/2022 20:39

My mum was the same as you. Not so much the throwing up and pain, but she had to put up with it until about 54/55.

Lovemusic33 · 13/11/2022 20:39

Does anyone wonder….”if this was mens issue I wonder if a solution would have been found?”….I’m sure it would.

Im only 40 but I’m done with it, I am on day 8 of my period still cramping and bleeding. I have had surgery which was supposed to stop my periods, got sterilised at the same time, my periods are slightly lighter but still long and painful. I have tried the pill and it just made me bleed all the time so I am wary of trying the implant or injection, can no longer have the coil and really my only other option is hysterectomy which I can’t go through with as I am a carer for my disabled dd and have no one to help.

If this was a male problem a solution would have been found, something that just stops periods without major surgery? It makes me angry that women have to just put up with this every month.

Lollypop701 · 13/11/2022 20:40

I’m still having periods although they are hit n miss and I have hrt patches which help a lot. I’d like an off button now as overall the hormonal angst is a bitch . If reincarnation is a thing I’m coming back as someone’s much loved pet

WestCorkGal · 13/11/2022 20:41

55 and still menstruating. Agree..what is the point. Started HRT 4 months ago and while its not a magic wand the long slow waves of heat gone and no more aches and pains. Anxiety much reduced too. It's actually made dealing with the emotional burden of menstruating easier. I keep reminding myself of the health benefits to women of having enough body made oestrogen that menstruation is still happening. This thread has left me feeling supported and not alone as an elderly menstruating woman! Most women are shocked to hear menstruation happening to an ol gal like me so thank you OP!

CrackingcheeseWallace · 13/11/2022 20:42

52...peri since 46...periods horrific. Had mirena coil fitted 3 years ago...Still have irregular spotting even with the sodding coil! On estrogen patch and now just started taking an additional progesterone tablet daily but still get spotting!!! So fed up of it all, its all bloody horrendous.

Peri was driving me nuts, only had symptoms for a few months as well...went on combined pill now have zero symptoms, it's bloody marvelous! Definitely worth considering.

RiftGibbon · 13/11/2022 20:49

BlancmanegeBunny · 13/11/2022 19:51

I'm 55 and feel exactly the same!!!!
Enough is enough!!!
To add insult to injury I have had regular periods for the last few years after never having regular periods in my life!!

Yep, a year younger than you and I'm fed up with 'em.

DWMoosmum · 13/11/2022 20:50

I'm 52 and still having them. Although I had the coil fitted on Thursday during a Hysteroscopy, so they may now stop.

JenniferBooth · 13/11/2022 20:55

Im 49 and have no idea what my periods are doing as the Mini Pill stops them anyway. So how am i supposed to know whats going on.

Batcountry8 · 13/11/2022 21:01

I'm 51 and been on the mini pill continuosly for 6 yrs.

No periods.

Worth a try op?

Moods, everything evened out. Have had one or two break through bleeds in that time.

HaalandisaDon · 13/11/2022 21:13

I was having excessively heavy periods once I went into perimenopause. Had the mirena coil fitted and iron supplements on prescription as I was so iron deficient, weak and dizzy from the heavy periods. Haven't had a period in the 4 years since have the mirena fitted and my iron levels have stabilised. Not having periods is great and very liberating. Go and see your doctor and ask whether it is possible to have one.

Oh my word! 59 and still having periods! Maybe I (I am 50) should invest in re-useable protection, I keep thinking every period will be my last.

Mine did stop for a bit earlier this year but they've started up again (now thinking maybe they stopped due to covid vaccine). I was going every 6 weeks or so but last one was 3 weeks. 3 weeks is ridiculous and I don't want to be anaemic. But there again, I've got a covid booster in a couple of weeks so maybe I'll have a few months without again.

Why does it all have to be so unpredictable. But yes I guess it's better to be this way and still have decentish hormone levels.

Cassillero · 13/11/2022 21:22

I feel your pain. Also 50 and have horrible heavy periods full of massive clots that resemble offal. Still regular as clockwork, but much much heavier. Just had to bin yet another set of bed linen due to flooding at night despite using super plus tampons and massive night pads. I can guarantee every single holiday I'll get my period so can't go swimming either.

KangarooKenny · 13/11/2022 21:27

I was 51 and became anaemic due to heavy periods, so had a Mirena. Wish I’d done it years ago. Fitting was absolutely fine. Still have a light monthly period, but it’s much better.

Hamserfan · 13/11/2022 21:30

@Cassillero I have invested in full brief style period pants from Modi Bodi for night time use. The absorbent panel goes all the way to the waist at the back. 🤞 no nighttime leaks since then

Rubblefish · 13/11/2022 20:19

Yeah hot flushes, and I have added plus of morning sickness which is the oestrogen levels going down but as I am still having periods, I don't tick the menopause box

If you're having hot flushes, you're perimenopausal.

FWIW, I had regular periods when I started going through perimenopause in my early 40s. Indeed, the various GPs I saw all insisted I wasn't perimenopausal because of my age coupled with the fact I was menstruating regularly, despite the fact I had hot flushes, night sweats, brain fogs, anxiety, weight gain and pretty much every other symptom of perimenopause.

Read NICE guidelines and return to the GP.

Meredusoleil · 13/11/2022 21:33

To the pp who suggested the mini-pill, I tried both the ones available as an alternative to the mirena and it was the worst time of my life: bled constantly after the first week, spotty, moody, sore boots. Basically, every side effect you can think of. Didn't even last a month!

Would love to go back on the combined pill, but am not allowed due to BP, overweight and previous sterilisation 😬

lobsterkiller · 13/11/2022 21:38

51 and was still really regular. My only symptom was anxiety and being mardy. I'm on patches, it's taken 5 months for me to feel the benefits but I bleed every 34 days instead of 26 and they're so much lighter.

Anonymouseposter · 13/11/2022 21:39

YANBU. My periods finally stopped when I hya hysterectomy at age 58. I was very fed up by then. For the final two years they were very heavy and I became anaemic. It turns out I had fibroids.
