Airbnb expectations

Not very experienced with renting airbnbs so just wondered what others' experiences have been and what general expectations were?

We're renting a room in an apartment as it was too expensive to stay in a local hotel or anything.

We have been given one towel each which should have lasted us for the week according to the owner. I asked her for fresh ones after 4 days and she begrudgingly gave us 2 more, saying she doesn't usually do this.

We should have brought more I know but it said on the page that linen was provided.

There are a couple of minor issues, hearing the other flatmate having loud sex, her leaving clumps of black hair in our shared bathroom etc.
The things you'd expect if you were living in a houseshare I'd Imagine.

Nothing is provided, just the room and shared bathroom, but for the price we paid we're very Lucky, the room is very cosy and warm as well as being well situated.

Just wondered about others Airbnb experiences?

I only airbnb the whole place now - when I had a room in the past it’s been like you say - basically flatsharing. If the price is fair I think it is what it is

Cheeseboards · 13/11/2022 15:15

I think I was very naive to expect some sort of service from the owners, like you'd get in a hotel, rather than, here's a room, that's it .
Will try to get a flat next time!

I used to do Airbnb & it’s definitely letting a room/bathroom - what “service” were you expecting??

SisterGeorgeMichael · 13/11/2022 15:20

What do you mean 'nothing was provided'? What sort of things should be provided?

They can't do anything about other people shagging!

Cheeseboards · 13/11/2022 15:20

I suppose being given fresh towels/bedding without asking, but i didn't know what to expect

Tomorrowisalatterday · 13/11/2022 15:21

I wouldn't expect fresh towels/sheets - we would just wash them ourselves if staying over a week

HotCoffee22 · 13/11/2022 15:22

I wouldn’t expect fresh towels or any sort of room service, it’s not a hotel it’s Airbnb. I guess the other guest didn’t specify they liked noisy sex. The host can’t really help that.

Cheeseboards · 13/11/2022 15:26

Yeah that's not the host's fault I know, it's just one of the issues of a flat share. Anyway didn't know what to expect so thanks for the feedback

I think a lot depends on the cost, if it was £20/30 a night you can’t be expecting miracles.
If it was £100 a night I’d be expecting a more hotel type service

Crikeyalmighty · 13/11/2022 15:37

Air bnb can be good - but I only ever rent the whole place

Why did you think it was cheaper than a hotel?

Did you not bother to Google before booking?

You are renting a house share though!!

Lcb123 · 13/11/2022 15:38

Totally depends on the cost - if it’s an expensive city for example and the room is the cheapest available I’d expect very little. TBH Airbnb I wouldn’t expect any service - just a clean bed and bathroom. I wouldn’t expect sheets changed within a weeks stay

But you basically rented a house share?

bellac11 · 13/11/2022 15:41

I would expect more than one towel if you were staying a week, one for my hair, one for my body and one for hand towel

Bedding can last a week

Having said that, we have never rented a room only, always the whole apartment/house/cottage

Clymene · 13/11/2022 15:43

You really shouldn't expect fresh towels. It's not a hotel.

Oddieconvert · 13/11/2022 15:43

As with most cases in life, expectations are invariably linked to how much you have paid for something.

if I stay in an air bnb, which to my financial circumstance is very low budget, my expectations are much much lower than if I splurged on an air bnb that to my financial circumstance would be luxury.

mashh · 13/11/2022 15:43

My expectations of air bnb is that it will be a more shoddy experience than a hotel

Violettaa · 13/11/2022 15:45

Yeah like PPs - it’s absolutely not a hotel, you’re just borrowing a bedroom. You need to look closely at the reviews (and price!) to understand what you’re getting.

NellesVilla · 13/11/2022 15:51

I learnt my lesson with air b n b last year, when I treated myself to the odd night between times living in my car. You often get what you pay for and I was paying £18-26 per night.

I had the delights of, in a male house: grimy, dirty bathroom and skid-marked toilets, then in most properties there was smelly, tired, mismatching bedding. The male house had blood stains on top of the duvet cover 🤢 Never again, unless I rent the whole place or it’s personally recommended.

Some were so filthy that I felt I was better off and happier in my car!

I certainly wouldn't expect clean bedding during a weeks stay. Spare towels are possible but not to be expected.

I rented rooms through Airbnb regularly for a while. They were definitely more interesting than a hotel! The first place was fine and the host was absolutely lovely, but one night she and her boyfriend decided to take a bath together for about 2 hours. Obviously it was her flat so no reason why not, but it was the only bathroom, it was late at night and I was desperate for the toilet and to go to bed. I didn't feel that I could say anything and ended up googling nearby pubs to try and find somewhere to go for a wee and to brush my teeth. Didn't stay there again.

The next place was owned by a (barely) functioning alcoholic with a drug addict son and a bitey dog, whose marriage to a man (with lots of issues caused by a mountaineering accident) was in the middle of breaking down. I found her sleeping in the dogs' bed one morning. I actually really liked them all and ended up staying there multiple times because there was lots of wine and interesting conversation on offer 🤣
