What a weird thread to start. Confused

My df always used to say
x said you’re not fit to sleep with pigs but I told him you we’re.

That is legitimately hilarious.

Said once to me about my cooking "that was surprisingly delicious!". Thanks FIL!

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 12/11/2022 21:55

Why do you ask OP?

I always think these types of things are really mean and gaslighty. There is a horrible intent but the person that wants to insult doesn't have the guts to say it, and when their victim gets upset they claim 'that's not what I meant / they're so sensitive / they took it the wrong way!'. Nasty and sneaky

@Sandysandwich

"I always feel more intelligent after reading your work = your work is awful so I feel clever in comparison - could it mean your work is so good/knowledgeable/intelligent that I feel smarter after reading it? That is what I would take from it-
You look really nice in this light= you look crap in a other types of lighting-or maybe you just look nice?-
I love how you don't care what anyone thinks of you= your behaviour is bizarre/you keep acting weird and don't seem to notice that other people find that offputting -or maybe you have such confidence to not care what others think which is an admirable thing?-
I don't care what others say about you, your alright in my book= everyone is talking about you behind your back/nobody else likes you ----really? What a stretch, seriously. Everyone has something to say about everyone. Stop trying to make others feel bad with insults dressed up as compliments. Absolutely pathetic and tells fat more about you and your sad little life than the person you're addressing.
Your house feels lived in= its a shit-tip ---or maybe it's just fucking cosy and nice! Ffs! Some women! I know for a fact my DH doesn't have this problem with his mates - women can be fucking bitchy and the original poster need to seriously GET A LIFE. Sad, very sad.

@tinyorchid Chill. I was just saying, because someone asked for clarity, how those statements (that the 1st poster got from a googled list of backhanded compliments), could potentially be interpreted as backhanded.

I was not saying that that is the only thing those statements could mean, or that that is how I feel about them.
Just that this is how they could be negatively interpreted. Because someone asked.

But also "I don't care what others say about you- you're alright in my book" is really not a stretch to suggest that they are implying that other people are talking about you behind your back. The sentence literally says that Other people have said things about you, that the speaker has disregarded to form their own opinion that the person is alright in their book.

The whole point of a backhanded compliment is that it is unkind, I don't use them, as I am not an asshole- it was just examples.

I agree, these ones don't feel backhanded to me.. they sound genuinely nice. but maybe a negative or anxious minded person might see them like that.
Soo many of examples on this thread are genuinely nasty though.

Igowherethe · 13/11/2022 04:15

Ah yes the criticism shrouded in a compliment.

By the way @CookPassBabtridge I don't care what the other posters say, I think you're marvelous 😉

RenoDakota · 13/11/2022 04:39

It looks nice at the back (new haircut).

Justcashnosweets · 13/11/2022 08:21

@SeemsSoUnfair that is exactly what was implied, as I am overweight.
