the problem with presenting ID is the people you go to the gig with. say I buy two tickets to something because I want to go, but I’m not sure who I’ll take with me. or, say I was going to take mate X but her childcare bails so mate Y spots in last minute. Not fair if I can’t change the name, but if I can change the name, then wham, I can sell the ticket on viagogo and change the name to that buyer.
For specific events - Sheeran, Glasto, it is possible to insist people show ID. but it’s not easy, it’s not really practical for eg an arena that normally only has an hour or two to get everyone through the doors, and it makes people more reluctant to buy a ‘spare’ and take a mate. for Ed that doesn’t matter. For an up and coming artist it very much does.
The Garth brooks method works to an extent, but he doesn’t travel a lot. How do you plan a tour if you don’t know how many dates you’ll do in each city? and if you only play one city, that forces fans to get a flight, a hotel, a meal out… might as well buy on resale at that point!
In the UK artists do not receive a cut of parking or food/bev.
Resale is a problem and it’s a significant number of peoples job to try to solve it. the best solution is for people not to buy on resale sites (or twitter!) no matter how much they want a ticket.
