Right Mumsnet,

What is the one word/syndrome/behaviour for the below...

Example. Someone has fucked up massively. They have a choice to stop fucking up but carry on as they don't want to lose face so continue doing the stupid thing.

Any ideas?

Stubborn, pig headed, obdurate, head strong. Any of them fit?

vivainsomnia · 12/11/2022 12:48

Persistent 😄

Trussing? Doing a Truss?

CraggyIslandTouristBoard · 12/11/2022 14:01

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 12/11/2022 14:52

Wankerism.

Xtraincome · 12/11/2022 15:15

Your answers are completely ace but not what I'm looking for.

Another example to assist:
Husband has affair, their relationship is a shit show. H gets chucked out by wife but has to carry on with OW due to major uproar it caused regardless of it being the right thing.

Cutting off your nose to spite your face?

Folly?

Stupidity?

I'm not sure what you are looking for. These are foolish behaviours, but don't necessarily have their own name/condition.

People get trapped in situations all the time, because they've not fully considered consequences and have burned their boats.

ElegantlyTouched · 12/11/2022 15:35

Sunk cost fallacy.

ElegantlyTouched · 12/11/2022 15:36

You keep throwing money at something because you've spent so much on it to begin with, even though it's not improving.

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 12/11/2022 15:38

Karma.

Sunk cost fallacy.

That's it. You carry on doing something that you know is wrong, but can't face giving up because you have already invested too much into it.

Thank you to everyone else. All the vocabulary was spot-on just not what I was trying to recall.

Trying to Google it was ridiculous, no chance. I knew MN would figure it out.
