Cutting back at Christmas

I suggested to stepdaughter that we only buy for the kids this year. My young granddaughter lives with me. Stepdaughter has two older children who I've always bought for.

In the past I've always bought for stepdaughter and her husband too. He is nasty and abusive and both her mother and I have offered to help her and the kids leave many times in the past. I only bought for him because I didn't want the kids to feel upset or awkward (or worse still, him sulk and be nasty all Christmas) if I didn't.

Anyway, this year things are especially difficult financially. Stepdaughter constantly talks about how little money they have and I know for sure that anything she's ever bought me has been done via store cards or credit cards.

Since I made my suggestion, my stepdaughter hasn't spoken to me.

My family are doing the same this year. Over the past 2 years there's been a few kids between us.
There is 6 adults and 4 children. We've decided to buy for the kids this year but set a £25 limit. We've also then done secret Santa amongst the adults so that everyone is still getting something but everyone's not having to spend a fortune. We have a £40 SS limit
