Creating this thread as my DH is clearly an idiot...

When you shorten November to Nov. How do you say Nov

Is it Nov - as in nob but with a v
Or
Is it Nove - as in by jove.

I ran this past my friend just now and she said Nov but her DH insisted it was Nov(e)

So, YANBU - of course it's like nob. How else would ot you say it. Or YABU - your DH is superior.

Jan and Feb are the only months where you might say the short version out loud.

Seebee · 10/11/2022 21:30

Nov is Nov, nove is nove. So it’s Nov. Your way.

But, unlike say Feb or Jan, I don’t think I’ve ever used it. Just as I don’t use Jul for July. So here’s another one for your DH. Jul. Is it Jule to rhyme with fuel, same nove logic, or is it Jul to rhyme with Cull? Sorry, cat, pigeons :-)

And is Dec pronounced Dessss or Deck like below deck? Or Dece like deeceeeee?

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 10/11/2022 21:43

Jann
Febb
Marrr
Ape-urrr
May
Junn
Jull
Aug
Sept
Oct
Nove
Deck

I can't explain it but that's how I'd read them. I think the confounding factor is I do not remember in my whole life ever saying the shortened dates out loud except for "Feb" because it's a tongue-twister that I always have to consciously remind myself how to pronounce as I said "Feb-you-reey" until I was about 8 because the rest of my family said it that way.

DH on the other hand says it's "Nov" not "Nove". He was also right about how to pronounce Chernobyl so now IDK.

I might write "Nov" but never say it out loud. So neither.

but in my head I say "Nov" as I write it. Not "Nove"

Same

parietal · 10/11/2022 22:15

I would 'say in my head' as Nov

but I would also say Nov-ember (short o)

maybe the DHs here say No-ve-mber (long o)

WednesdaysChild11 · 10/11/2022 22:20

YANBU and wtf??!!! Nove 🤣🤣🤣 what on earth?

LeMoo · 10/11/2022 22:21

PurpleButterflyWings · 10/11/2022 21:11

You are BOTH being unreasonable to shorten the word 'November' for NOV when you are saying the word. Writing it maybe, for quickness, but SAYING NOV instead of NOVEMBER is very odd. YABU. Both of you!

This

LeMoo · 10/11/2022 22:22

Although next time something surprises me, I'm going to explain "By Nove!"

steff13 · 10/11/2022 22:24

If I ever see it shortened to Nov, I still say November. I don't try to say "Nov."

sarahc336 · 10/11/2022 22:25

Eh you don't speak nov out loud you surely just use it when written down ?? But if I had to speak it I'd probably say nove x

CloudybutMild · 10/11/2022 22:25

Neither, you say the full name. The abbreviation is only used when writing it.

What fresh hell is this? November with a long Ooo.
who says Noooovember? Or is this an aye-up ducks accent?
OP, I’m really annoyed with your bloody DH.

Can we go back to 5 minutes ago when it didn't even occur to me that people might try to say Nov (or Nove) out loud?!?! They both sound so cringey to me. This is going to bug me now, haha. (Half a vote for Nove but I hate both of them)
