Would you take advantage?

I got an email this evening from a newish, smallish company that was very clearly meant to be an internal email that was sent to their mailing list by mistake. It gave a whopping discount code.

Not going to lie, I did intend to take advantage so I got as far as the checkout. There were queues onto the website and queues to check out so I wasn't the only one.

Then I got a pang of... guilt? So I didn't check out. Not sure if it was because it was an obvious mistake or because it was a small company or what. Or because there was a direct link to a real person?

Now don't get me wrong, I have in the past taken advantage of discounts (NOT the infamous John Lewis one last year because that felt "wrong" too) but I wondered what, if anything, stops you from taking advantage of mistakes like this?

No judgement. I'm trying to worko out why I feel bad about certain ones but am happy to use others.

And I know they can cancel the orders anyway.

Why are you even doubting yourself? Use it!

Zoomingo · 10/11/2022 18:51

I too got the email - sweets?. Not convinced it wasn't marketing. But I'm not using it as I'd feel bad if it wasn't.

Zoomingo · 10/11/2022 18:53

The fact they linked to a product in the email is what makes me think its weird marketing.

BasiliskStare · 10/11/2022 18:58

I would feel guilty if a person had sent out by accident and would probably not use it ( to try to mitigate them getting them into trouble - although probably are but the fewer people who take it up the better for the person and the company ) if I could see it was a mistake by someone in a small company. Not sure why but just my thought.

No, it wasn't CK because I got that one too. Must be the night!🤣 That was a bit odd wasn't it? It seemed spammy. Did it work then?

This was clothing. It was a "thanks for your hard work" email so not odd marketing, unlike CK maybe. They always have stuff I like but I wasn't actually planning on getting anything so maybe that influenced me.

Oh!!

The CK one looked like it would work but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

@Zoomingo why not? The owner annoys me so that may influence me! 🤣 I didn't actually use it. As I said, it was spammy and I don't really use that site anyway so wasn't even tempted. So no moral debate there for me. 😂
