...not to go?

Have name-changed as this is quite out-ing!!

I work for a small company (about 30 of us) and the woman who owns the business works with us day to day. She is regularly rude and unpleasant, berates people to their face and there is a shocking turnover of staff because of this. She swears at us, frequently tells us we're next to pointless and shows us zero respect.

I continue working there as it's near to my home (walking distance) and I care for my mum who has dementia and the hours enable me to do this, my smaller team manage is wonderful, fitting my shifts around how my mum is doing on any given week.

I don't exaggerate when I say everyone dislikes the business owner and hates working for/with her. But apart from the business owner I love working with everyone, they're all brilliant colleagues and the job is great.

My problem is the Christmas party - each year everyone goes along and socializes with the business owner and they think I'm strange for not going. But my idea of a good time is definitely not sitting down for a meal with someone I find basically rude and unpleasant.

Colleagues say I should go along to socialize with them and ignore business owner, she is paying after all. AIBU to not go based on making a point of not spending time with someone whose personality I find rude and disrespectful?

I'd say it's entirely up to you.
Personally I don't think I'd like it, I'd keep looking at her in case she was about to turn into the Grinch..

Go to the party she's paying for, rinse her for everything you can & have a good time with your mates.

You sound entitled and attention seeking.

You have very clearly jumped at the chance to insult the owner at full throttle, in an attempt to impress people on here/sway people into agreeing with you and have clearly exaggerated things with that attempt.

You sound like a gossip: you've already discussed this scenario at length with your colleagues by your own admission so why are you now asking random strangers on the internet for their input unless you're just trying to seek attention for yourself?

AnApparitionQuipped · 10/11/2022 18:46

Don't go - simply say you have 'a prior engagement'.

Eh, what? That's a bit of a reach from the OP!

Sounds like a bit of a stretch there...

If you don't want to go then don't, but I agree with the above. Go and have a good time with your friends and don't give her any head room.

Did you even read the same OP as me??
