To be sick to the back teeth of fashionable words...

"Empathy", "iconic", "brutal" and now "visceral". The hottest words for the bandwagon jumpers.
The use of trendy words put me off a person. Anyone else or is it just me?

I don't mind if it's used in the right context- but I hate when people use literally but don't actually mean that

I love using literally incorrectly on purpose for comic value:
She literally exploded 😁
I had an acquaintance not understand and she corrected me on it... Have avoided her ever since.

I do use the word brutal, and have done so for many years. I only use it in context, I believe.

Caminante · 10/11/2022 11:14

I kind of like visceral but again, only in the right context.
Can you give some examples of when these words are used in an annoying way?

“I’m an empath”

💀

SavoirFlair · 10/11/2022 11:16

The most overused word on Mumsnet is “vile”.

If a neighbour forgets to bring in their bin at nights it’s “vile”.

If someone decks out their whole house in grey fabrics it’s “vile”.

What frustrates me is that “vile” should mean what it says - extremely unpleasant.

As in, cleaning up masses of vomit on a dance floor is vile. Jimmy Savile was vile. Etc.

it’s a word that is misused about 50 times a day on here

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/11/2022 11:17

Vile or grim, on MN

I don’t like it when people overuse certain words or use them out of context, so to that extent I agree

peridito · 10/11/2022 11:20

My neighbours don't contact plumbers or roofers ,they "reach out " to them .

'I don't mind if it's used in the right context- but I hate when people use literally but don't actually mean that.'

'I love using literally incorrectly on purpose for comic value:

It is actually correct to say that:

'The adverb literally means "actually," and we use it when we want others to know we're serious, not exaggerating or being metaphorical.'

Oneofthosewsillydays · 10/11/2022 11:21

The word I hate that is being tossed around all over workplaces is 'pragmatic.'

Jourdain11 · 10/11/2022 11:23

Dovetail
Cascade

Cam22 · 10/11/2022 11:25

There is literal and there is metaphorical.

When we say “ literally exploded” we obviously mean burst into anger.

The end.

Wauden · 10/11/2022 11:25

'Clean lines' (that phrase is meaningless) and 'materiality' (when the word 'materials'will do perfectly well) as used by designers and architects.
Really annoying!

Wauden · 10/11/2022 11:27

Oneofthosewsillydays · 10/11/2022 11:21

'Pragmatic 'as in 'everyone knows its not going to work but go ahead anyway '.

Cam22 · 10/11/2022 11:27

Correction…oops

We should NEVER say literally exploded if it’s a person. An object might literally explode, however.

AlmostOver22 · 10/11/2022 11:28

I voted YABU because I agree in principle except the 4 examples in the OP are just standard words IMO rather than fashionable.

fashionable words for me would be corporate style words like reach out or circle back.

Cam22 · 10/11/2022 11:29

Proactive. (Have always loathed it.)

Going forward.

IsThePopeCatholic · 10/11/2022 11:29

To access - why not just ‘get’?
deep dive: why not ‘in-depth look at’?

Timetochangetheoil · 10/11/2022 11:30

Aesthetic.
Problematic.

Ugh, yes, 'deep dive' is so annoying!

SydneyCarton · 10/11/2022 11:34

Passionate 🙄

Notjusta · 10/11/2022 11:35

I was going to say aesthetic @Timetochangetheoil. Tweens and teens in particular seem to love using this incorrectly, e.g. "her bedroom is really aesthetic".

@Wauden I find pragmatic is used to mean 'we know it's a bit of bodge/shit solution, but we'll do it anyway' - I work in public sector and typically the subtext is we don't have money or people to do anything different!

I'm going to add 'circle back' to the list.

Caminante · 10/11/2022 11:43

@whumpthereitis

Ok good one 😂
That is really annoying!

TheNoonBell · 10/11/2022 11:44

That is just so exclusionary to people who don't have teeth. You fascist!

Only joking... 😂

ItsRainingTacos79 · 10/11/2022 11:44

Cannot watch masterchef anymore because it's all about the 'cookery'.
