To be sick to the back teeth of fashionable words...

"Empathy", "iconic", "brutal" and now "visceral". The hottest words for the bandwagon jumpers.
The use of trendy words put me off a person. Anyone else or is it just me?

‘Can I get’ annoys me - adult DCs use it - I tried to move them to ‘May I have?’ But they just used it more.
Be kind utterly infuriates me - Kind was a complement you used to thank someone who, in your eyes, deserved it for a reason ‘oh that’s kind of you, thank you’ - Now it’s an admonishment said imv in a Condescending way.
Surely being considerate is what is meant.

CounterQueen · 10/11/2022 14:55

Having worked in the corporate world for 20 years now I am pretty good at tuning out any irritating phrases/latest jargon, however there are three words/phrases that just set my teeth on edge every time I (frequently) hear them:

”value engineer” (i.e. ask for a discount)
”punchy” (i.e. strong - have heard it applied to an opinion, a fee estimate, someone’s lunch…)
”in the coming days and weeks/weeks and months” - this is used allllll the time and I have no idea why I find it so irritating. I just do.

My neighbours don't contact plumbers or roofers ,they "reach out " to them .

Yes. 'Reach out'. I feel embarrassed every time I hear it.

Notjustanymum · 10/11/2022 15:03

Words do sometimes become popular, I don’t really mind unless they are used as PP have mentioned, out of context.
I’m also not a fan of misused expressions, like “that needs done” instead of “that needs to be done”, but I guess that as long as we understand what others are saying it’s not a big issue…

GriddleScone · 10/11/2022 15:19

Zero - nobody says 'no' anymore. Zero interest, zero money.

Abuse - used for minor infractions or disagreements. Overuse of the word undermines genuine issues

Literally - c'mon people, not even in jest!

Remember when people used to say ‘a cheeky little.....’?

i’ve got to the point where I was contemplating buying a machine gun.

Often "a cheeky little xxxxx with this one " - showing an entirely unremarkable picture of a couple having a glass of wine

StripeyMow · 10/11/2022 23:15

Bespoke really irritates me, and more recently, curated. Both overused. Usually by people who are neither tailors or curators, but they are trying to sell you something sh*te or over egg their project work.

Cam22 · 10/11/2022 11:57

A nown?

Yes, as in “why are you taking any notice of what some random on MN tells you”.

DdraigGoch · 11/11/2022 00:21

"Fascist" or "far right" used to refer to anyone to the right of Lenin. Words lose all meaning when they're misused.

"Literal violence" meaning "not violent at all, just mildly upsetting".

Cannot watch masterchef anymore because it's all about the 'cookery'.

And they always produce a ‘plate of food’, well, blow me, I thought it was going to be a roof tile full of wasps… oh wait that’s I’m A Celebrity

Mercurial123 · 11/11/2022 05:47

I hate "mean" it's all over MN. Makes posters sound like teenagers.

Knulp · 10/11/2022 12:28

my only pet peeve is 'can i get' rather than 'can i have' often heard in cafes and fast food joints, thanks USA

There is absolutely nothing wrong or illogical about "can I get?"

No, there isn't. (Or many, if not all, of the words that pps don't like)
But as can be seen from the comments about "get", they don't like it because they (mistakenly) think it's an Americanism. And if your (very average, linguistically speaking) Mumsnetter is one thing, it's anti-American. You can tell them on every single fucking thread they post this drivel on that "get" has its roots in Middle English and we took it over the Atlantic ourselves, but they won't believe you.

Snnowflake · 11/11/2022 06:45

If I get something I myself do something to get it so I get my book from the shelf. Can I get a burger - request to McDs staff member - I am not getting the burger, someone else is, could I have, may I have are more sense.

FuzzyPuffling · 11/11/2022 06:51

It was dinned into me at an early age that "can" is ability and "may" is permission, so "can I get a burger?" involves me scrambling over the counter and grabbing one. "May I have...?" is asking if the counter staff would kindly provide me with one. There is a difference.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/11/2022 06:52

Interview, meaning to be interviewed, e.g. 'I am interviewing for a potential new role next week'. I find it confusing because until recently interview was a verb only used for the people doing the interviewing, not having an interview.

So if someone asks you “what did you get for your birthday?” are you confused because you didn’t buy your own presents?

BitOutOfPractice · 11/11/2022 06:54

Curated. 😡

I don't care where it came from. I am old and I loathe it. Please may I have.. ? was dinned into me growing up and I will probably be the last person in the UK to say it.

ShiningStarQueen · 11/11/2022 06:55

What I hate the most is actually about myself tbh. My work is the worst for using wanky expressions. In order to fit in, I’ve found myself using a few of them in emails, just so my emails sound right in ‘company speak’ There are a few still that I point blank refuse to use and I will never ever use my pronouns on my email address.

Regardless where it has its roots, it has certainly become an Americanism, and more often than not, is said with an accompanying transatlantic twang...

I suppose you would put the thousands that emailed the BBC as all being average linguistically speaking folks?

This thread is making me laugh because I use virtually every word that is mentioned on it. I must be the most annoying person on the planet. Lol.
