I'm really happy for people who have enough money for food/holidays/bills/savings etc...

But it sucks having nothing for anything extra in life, including increasing bill cost.

Anyone else.

Yes I agree. After bills/rent/food I have NOTHING left for luxuries, and I mean nothing. I grew up with my grandparents who have very strong opinions on people with no money and are convinced I just throw my money away on frivolous things.

mrsharrisgoestoparis · 09/11/2022 21:58

What do you work at??

SweetSakura · 09/11/2022 22:01

Yanbu. It's grindingly tough once you are that point.

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 09/11/2022 22:01

Hello! Checking in! nice idea for a thread. Mumsnet is like a foreign country sometimes. Thankfully its been quite warm here so far but I'm dreading the cold coming. We've no flooring or curtains yet and I know it's going to be bloody cold here if winter ever comes!

Redwineandroses · 09/11/2022 22:04

Ah it's shit. Mt mum always used to say you know when you're poor when your searching down the back of the sofa for change to buy a paper.. (from back in the day when newspapers where the only way you could find out news etc)

AdoraBell · 09/11/2022 22:05

YANBU in the least. It’s a total grind. I’m fortunately better off now but grew up in poverty in the 1970’s, DH too.

Maverickess · 09/11/2022 22:11

Yes, it'd be nice to be among the like-minded, I've been warm tonight and feel guilty at what I've spent on the heater and electric blanket. Probably going to pay for it at a later date no doubt.

Although we should all check that we have cut out cloth accordingly, and go and get a better job/retrain, just move house and stop buying fags, booze, sky TV and coffees before someone tells us that's what the problem is 🙄

why? Are you going to patronise the OP and say she should have worked harder in school/should just get promoted/should retrain/ all of the above? Because it’s exhausting being told by internet strangers that your life would be better if only it were a different life,,,

YANBU I’m so tired of having to weigh up the cost of everything. I wake up feeling sick with anxiety and no matter how carefully I budget there is never anything spare. XH who doesn’t work or contribute financially to DD is always moaning about how little he has and pointing out new things she needs often because he has lost or broken them.

I don't even have a sofa to search in !!

Times are so bloody hard.

At the same time try not to make it a thread about a race to the bottom. They'll probably be people come on the tread where you can share tips and ideas to make life a little less shit. And I don't mean people being wanky saying "why don't you take in ironing " 🙄

Chattycathydoll · 09/11/2022 22:19

Hullooo, hoping I can fit in here. Single mum, have a job now so at least I’m better off than I was but it’s still achingly shit. Worry about money literally every day especially as I’m on a fixed term contract, it’s like the days are ticking down til I’m stuck again, and since they know they’ve got me over a barrel I’m currently the lowest paid member of staff in the office (pay grades are sort of visible/common knowledge). Feel so demoralised.

nutty123 · 09/11/2022 22:20

Yanbu. I went food shopping yesterday and could have cried in the aisles. Everything has gone up so much. Took me ages as I was weighing up the should I/ shouldn’t I question over everything.

No race happening here. Just people (hopefully) knowing what it's like to live on a low wage / benefits.

No judgement here.

Feel for you. I feels sometimes it feels worse earning money and still not having enough (than being on benefits - no judgement, we all expect someone working to have more money than someone on benefits - although both sets of money is utter shit).

OP posts:
Rosebel · 09/11/2022 22:25

I know the feeling. I luckily got a pay out from my last job recently because before that I was absolutely dreading Christmas. I was literally imaging having to tell my 3 children there'd be no presents. Still I don't know what I'll do next year.
DH and I both work full time and we still struggle to pay the bills and put food on the table. I'd love to have savings but we just don't earn enough.

artishard · 09/11/2022 22:26

Feel everyone's pain here. My partner and I are both chefs earning a modest wage and I've very inconveniently broken my arm, consequently I'm now on SSP for at least a month. I'll probably go back to work at the start of December before it's fully healed as we can't feasibly do without my wage for any longer. Spending most of my days in bed to keep warm and avoid putting the heating on for as long as humanly possible. In the meantime, my partner is working 70 hours a week and has had one day off in the last fortnight to try and get us through.

Worrying times 😭

I do online shopping. The only item that hasn't gone up is kinder hippo single chocolates (25p each). I'm still able to get 4 a week for my DC.

Like food and shoes, for instance. I'd be so hacked off with them

Whereabout in the country are you? I live next to an estate with some v.wealthy people and they seem to be always getting rid of nearly new curtains due to changing colour schemes.
