I'm really happy for people who have enough money for food/holidays/bills/savings etc...

But it sucks having nothing for anything extra in life, including increasing bill cost.

Anyone else.

I am currently wondering whether to buy Christmas crackers this year.

I've never bought them. They are one of many things on the long list of non essentials I just don't buy. DS has never known any different, which makes it easier.

@FortSalem86 Yeah, I’ve noticed that too. I think she makes a few quid if people buy them through her link. Although she has posted some actual bargains too.

The environment will thank you for not doing so.

In my case its having a child that has caused us to be so much worse off. My childcare costs are more than my mortgage. I dont know what to do. Every month is a struggle trying to scrabble the money together to pay for the childminder. I went down to 4 days and had to go back when he was 6 months old which broke my heart - we'd just run out of money. I cant go back up to 5 days as it really will mean I come out with nothing at all, not even £20 a week to tie us over

The cost of food, the cost of energy bills, all rising, Im in tears every month and try stretching my last few pounds like never before. I have credit card debt that is mounting - because we cant make ends meet anymore. It really is depressing. My only light is that in 18 months when my LO is 3 I will get some help towards the childcare. Its so hard (and i know i know, some people on MN will say its my own fault for having a child I guess)

@lucywho123 it really boils my piss when people say don't have kids.
If we don't have kids then who's going to provide (in the form of taxes & NI contributions) & do the jobs (doctors, nurses, caters, social workers etc) for the older generation?

We are sitting on a ticking time bomb in this country as the largest generation are the baby boomers whilst generations that come after are smaller.

Japan is having a similar problem but far worse.

I’ve done what my mum used to do and got myself a housekeeping purse. After payday I take a set amount per week out of the cash point and put it in a pot in my kitchen cupboard. Very weekend I take my weekly allowance out of the pot and put it into the purse. I the have this to shop with. So far it’s working well…

Got a £1.50 Lidl fruit and veg box today. Loads of peppers, tomatoes and cooking apples. I've made chilli in the stovetop pressure cooker, and stewed apple with cinnamon.

I'm loving this thread and feel I fit in here. Good to know I'm not alone as was feeling pretty down looking at a recent thread about how much MNr's are spending on their 2023 holidays Sad

The competitive holiday threads?

I have found my people....

I spent yesterday practically in tears doing an online shop deciding what I needed to prioritise and what would make the most meals for a week. Teen DS is always hungry.

Christmas is sorted as luckily I save with a girl from work monthly and also have an Asda savings card which I add a fiver a week to all year.

So far heating has been on low approx 3 times and I have bought some string lights battery operated so throughout December it will be tree lights and those only once we settle down for the night. Along with the giant fleece Blankets. DC love it as its cosy... Little do they know I'm on a money saving mission.

I love second hand also... DP replaced their dining table and side unit so offered me their 'old' ones which are solid oak, like new. It made my month. DM also replaced all her cushions so I have those too now. Refreshed the front/dining room a bit which has made a huge difference to how I feel about being in the house.

We have struggled financially for a while and gradually trying to get rid of any loans or credit cards... It seems never ending...

I'm so chuffed today as I brought home a Sunday dinner that'll feed me for 2 days (from work) and I needed a couple of bits from the shop and when I went into my online banking to make sure I had enough in my current account I realised I have not spent any money (except my weekly bus ticket) for 4 days.
I'm celebrating by having the electric blanket on tonight for a warm 😜
