I'm really happy for people who have enough money for food/holidays/bills/savings etc...

But it sucks having nothing for anything extra in life, including increasing bill cost.

Anyone else.

WishfulWanda, obviously Grin, but a friend was telling me her DS (twenties) spends £15 a day on takeaway food at work Shock - bacon roll and coffee, then another coffee and a doughnut or similar, meal deal for lunch, couple of cans of pop and a mars bar or 2. She was horrified and is trying to get him to at least take cans from a multipack at home and maybe take a packed lunch, but he's not impressed.

She's tried to get it through his knuckle head that £15 five days a week adds up to a substantial wodge across the year. She's already said if he comes moaning to her that he can't afford this or that she'll just roll her eyes at him.

@x2boys I'm on the old benefit system so should be between now and the 22nd I think. Just wishful thinking they'd pay it straight away. I'll just have to be careful with my fuel usage.

To add, we should have chosen our ExHs/DHs better, ie, earns 6 figures and does half of all the other parenting/housework.

Waited till our fertile years were almost over before having DCs, having spend that time somehow amassing a fortune that will cover all expenses for 12 months should DH leave, and cover all future expenses on our salary alone.

Better still, ensure we marry a man who will never, ever leave, but if they do, somehow find a way to still chase those career goals and promotions.

Don’t become disabled. Don’t have disabled DCs.

Those last two seem to be a particularly horrible repeating theme this week.

According to some threads ,having a disabled child who is " lucky" enough to be disabled enough to get full DLA means you should be living the life òf luxury 🙄
Not sure where im going wrong, as we are still skint every month
We do have a " free"car though( mobility)

Some of my friends on universal credit got it it yesterday so keep checking your bank account!

Threadkillacilla · 10/11/2022 08:54

Just done our monthly Tesco order (works out cheaper for us monthly as we tend to make do) and the cheap butter has actually gone down! Also hit some Clubcard coupons which is fortunate as the delivery pass is coming up for renewal. And found a new mobdro type free app so Dad can watch sport. I'm making poor look easy today me.

I’m a TV tart and managed SKY for a year for £10 because quidco had an exceptionally good deal. These days I start and cancel nowtv depending on their offers. Sky channels for £1/month? I’m in.

if anyone lives near a fancy hotel, it’s worth checking out what they do with their “crap”. In my case, the “crap” was the stuff Gleneagles threw in a skip(s) because the millionaires didn’t like the new decor… I’ve a £600 fucking lamp stand which will probably hold up to nuclear war. Friends and neighbours had entire houses furnished in gleneagles “cast offs”. I’ve got limited edition prints on the walls (alongside the £5 ikea jobs).

I do understand (to a degree) the mentality of secondhand = failing at life. My ex-mil is from the east end of Glasgow and she won’t even buy a bogof on a tin of been a because she doesn’t want people to think she can’t afford full price.

AngelicInnocent · 10/11/2022 09:04

A lot of the money saving suggestions I see that really work require you being able to spend money up front. If you can save up to buy an airfryer, a heated throw or a bulk buy of a whole month's food, you are probably doing better than a lot of people

dottiedodah · 10/11/2022 09:05

Feeling every one's pain here. Always look at e bay ,charity shops etc . Betterment for environment as well.try to only buy things on offer where I can .I Don't get people saying thankfully their dc will be set up for life.even if they leave a good inheritance still can come unstuck divorce, job losses and so on .also we all would like a"good" job but not always possible. A friend has job at well known company.minimum wage and were promised bonus if they put hours in .did as asked ,bonus not appearing ffs no unions

But the delivery charges! £4.99 now seems standard for sainsburies and Ocado?

We do click anc collect. Much cheaper and no waiting in for the delivery

AngelicInnocent · 10/11/2022 09:08

Anyone really needing the extra couple of pounds each week, don't forget that if you cancel your TV licence, you can still watch non live TV (other than the bbc). So itv player etc is still fine.

luxxlisbon · 10/11/2022 09:12

I imagine your friend was exaggerating to you. You can’t even buy all that for £15.

Jaffacakeorisitabiscuit · 10/11/2022 09:17

luxxlisbon why would she be exaggerating? She's concerned her DS is wasting hard earned money - her family aren't well off, she knows the damage being short of money can do. Her DS is an adult (living at home) and can spend his £ where he likes, but she sees him spaffing northwards of three grand a year and is just Sad he doesn't see the waste.

Threadkillacilla · 10/11/2022 09:26

My adult DC were horrified at the suggestion of pack up, it's not the done thing now.

Or better yet get a fire stick and pay £30 for a app than unlocks all tv channels, shows and movies for a year.
I've saved a fortune. And yes I know copyright blah blah blah but needs must.

There’s different levels of struggle though, as the Heated Throw And Airfryer posters demonstrate.

Meklk · 10/11/2022 09:46

I'm so grateful the weather is really warm this autumn in London. Even without heating it's minimum +18C in the house. But there are lots of things that make me worry about - my landlord probably will increase our rent, my son's music class increasing costs almost every single month. Husband already does 50/55hrs a week, I'm doing part time because can't get any childcare, every bloody nursery fully booked. It sucks.

But in this case they'll send a threatening letters every second day. I did it, we even sold our TV, so no TV in the house and watched only YouTube. Received letters with £1000 fine.

ofwarren · 10/11/2022 09:52

I just nipped in Aldi on the way back from the school run to get a loaf and some sugar and they were giving away as many boxes of mince pies as you wanted because they had today's date on it!
I took 4
Winner!

ofwarren · 10/11/2022 09:53

Zippedydoo123 · 10/11/2022 07:55

I don't go to Lidl or Aldi I did used to but shopping online with Asda is just as good. I tried going back twice the other month but it made zero difference.

I tried Lidl and you are right, ASDA is just as good. It's cheaper if anything, especially if you don't buy branded.

SilverCatStripes · 10/11/2022 09:54

I found out about something through work called ‘Company Shop’ , it sells surplus supermarket food very cheaply, they’re in different locations, so it may be a help for some of you, you can join if you are on certain benefits or work for certain employers , you sign up through the website (www.companyshopgroup.co.uk)

I grew up in poverty and it drives me bananas to see middle class advice being dished out to people who are in need!

hope you are doing okay, it’s shit having no money especially in the winter months

You need to email them and remove any implied right of access. They never send me letters and I know they have no authority so if they did turn up I'd just tell them to piss off and close the door. They're just bullies looking for low hanging fruit (usually women) to target. It's so easy not to need a tv licence.

ofwarren · 10/11/2022 10:02

I've not had a TV licence for over 10 years. They did pester a lot at first but mainly leave us alone now.
We get a letter, probably twice a year to "the occupier" asking if they/watch TV.

Yeah but you just need to ignore them ,they start by sayng we notice there is no tv licence at this address please let us know if you dont need one and we will update our records ,the letters become increadingly threatening ,with them accusing you of breaking the law etc and that you will reveive a visit soon etc etc and then they start the cycle again ,seroously just ignore ,they have no power of entry ,even if one of their inspectors turns up you dont have to engage with them.
