To think the cost of living payment should have been paid differently?

Would like to think 99% of people have used it as it's meant, to help with food, fuel etc

However, on my socials today I have seen 1 person spend it on nails and 2 tattoos, and another on a PS5....

Not sure that's what it's meant for?

We have put ours aside for food and power and to help with Xmas

Cuppasoupmonster, of course you can. You can be as crass as you like and nobody here will stop you. Doesn't mean that you're not thought of as a bit lower than pond life to be so goady when so many are going through it.

I'm not entitled to the payment. I don't begrudge it one bit for those who are receiving it, good for them, I hope that it stretches as far as possible and that they can spend it without censure from bigoted twats.

I'm really pleased having skim-read the thread to see so many taking the mickey out of the OP and her ilk.

Will we get a choice of places to buy food from?

Yes, I wonder if we'll get a choice in where we shop? Maybe the checkout will have a bell that rings instead of a beep when our food is scanned to warn other customers we are using our vouchers. I think I would rather go hungry.

XenoBitch · 11/11/2022 18:34

Cuppasoupmonster · 11/11/2022 18:28

I’m willing to bet it wasn’t for that reason.

And if it was, would you begrudge them that?

Everyone on PIP gets £150 soon. Many work and don't really need it at all. Are you going to insist they are also paid in vouchers too? Are you going to complain when they use it to get their nails done? Or is it just the low/non earners that are too dumb to be trusted with cash?

And a big red X will flash above the till when you try to use the voucher for a non-essential... like wine, or chocolate. Or dog food. That is not essential! Dirty poor people should be eating them, not feeding them.

Buying a PS5 when you’re allegedly struggling so much you need a one off emergency government payment IS dumb. Sorry but it is.

Don’t bother with coke, so few carbs - I have lucozade for mine, or orange juice 😊

Coke is higher per 100ml in carbs, calories and sugars than Lucozade..

I get 150ml cans of coke for 35p each; 500ml of lucozade is £1.60, and I wouldn’t necessarily need to use more than a third if a bottle.
Orange juice doesn't seem to always work for me, so I'll stick with Coke. Thanks for the advice though Smile

You’re just being silly now.

It’s not as high in glucose which is faster than fructose. But stick to whatever works Smile

Whatever anyone is entitled to, they only get it once. If they waste it, then it’s their problem. Nothing to do with anyone else, any more than the universal £400 “fuel handout,” or Covid furlough, grants, loans or handouts were.

As disabled pensioners we got £150 each, and will get £300 extra fuel allowance.

I’m not justifying all the champagne we’ve bought from it lol 🙄

I do agree but there will be more threads on here in a few weeks moaning about how badly UC claimants are treated, how benefits are a ‘pittance’, how something needs to be done etc. How can you help people who won’t help themselves? Seriously?

But as has been said in a PP, you can be on a low income and cut your cloth accordingly.

I am on UC, and do not live above my means. I don't have kids or a car. I live in a shit and cheap area. I know how to shop and cook with cheap food. I don't buy clothes, make-up, and I don't have my hair done. I am super low maintenance. Cheap phone, no Sky TV. Everything in my house is ancient but works.
My heating rarely goes on as I run hot anyway. My fuel bills have barely risen.

I got the CoL payment. Now, maybe I do not "need" it because I can cope anyway... but I got it anyway, and I am responsible with what I do have.
I am using it to take my mum out for a meal.. and I just spent £30 on Etsy for craft stuff that does help my mental health. The rest will just sit in my bank account.

Milly2022 · 11/11/2022 18:53

It's really none of your concern what others do with their money. Regardless of where the money came from. Worry about your own situation.

Mass thigh-rubbing from you and your chums then? There seem to be a few posters who get something special out of seeing others struggling and your faux concern is as transparent as it is nauseating.

I bought an 80 inch tv with the last payment.

I thought I would be more sensible this time.

I'll buy from a small, local dealer as well, I'm all for supporting up and coming entrepreneurs.

I once had a drug dealer hand me a business card with ‘alternative pharmacist’ on it.

We must support local businesses

Gilead · 11/11/2022 20:29

Which is why it should come in the form of a voucher that can be spent on food, utilities etc. Then they wouldn’t be able to waste it would they?
Do you not think before you type. You have no idea how belittling it is to have people ask my daughter ‘what does she want?’ Because I’m in a wheelchair, or to have to ask people to reach things for me in supermarkets. The best one is I have to wait at the cancer centre until someone walks by because I can’t open the door. People like you suggesting vouchers limit my options further, as if it’s not humiliating enough already. 😡

Hooverphobe · 11/11/2022 20:35

Can I use my vouchers on Tesco finest or is it the value range only? Will a klaxon go off if I pick up a branded item? What happens if I loiter in homewares or sniff a flower?

After hurricane Katrina pre-loaded cards were dished out. A fair few ended up at Louis Vuitton I think it was.

And if you want the cheapy supermarket/Primark clothing.. will that get blocked too?
You are expected to buy from a charity shop instead?

Nah, you can have sackcloth or hairshirts only.

This thread shows the system is really flowed,

there are people on benefits that are really struggling to make ends meet, then there people who are not qualified For any handouts or top-ups yet are still struggling to make ends meet , then there claimers who use the tops ups for non essential things because what the total of handouts they get is more than enough to cover their expenses so any top ups is surplus.

True

Do we have to knit them from our own loose hair and pubes?

Only after you whittle the needles yourself from sticks you’ve found in the forest

But that will be a freebie.. from the forest. Surely UC claimants are not allowed such luxuries. We will have to whittle the needles from our own bones that we have had to assess as no longer needing. I don't really need my little finger.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 12/11/2022 15:50

Of course people should prove they need help before being given taxpayer’s money Hmm only on here is that seen as ‘controversial’

You must really lament the closing of the workhouses.
