I have a son in tears trying to do his maths homework and I don’t understand it to help him! Is anyone a maths wiz? Can I post the problems and someone can tell me how to help him?

Yes, post the question and I’ll try to help

PomPomSugar · 08/11/2022 21:36

These are the ones I just can’t help on!

I’ll send you the solution with working out but basically the method you use here is to cross multiply

kitchenSink5 · 08/11/2022 21:40

Last one
Square so sides are equal
6x-1=4x+6

6x-4x = 6+1
2x=7
X=7/2=3.5

kitchenSink5 · 08/11/2022 21:44

Second last

5x-4 = 3(3x+8)
5x-4=9x +24
4x= 28
X=7

parietal · 08/11/2022 21:44

Q1
(2x-7)/4 = (x+3)/3
multiply both sides by 4 and by 3 to get ride of the fractions
3(2x-7) = 4(x+3)
multiply out the brackets
6x-21 = 4x+12
simplify
2x = 33
x = 16.5

parietal · 08/11/2022 21:45

(but that seems like an odd answer so I might have gone wrong)

kitchenSink5 · 08/11/2022 21:48

1/15 =3/45

3+2x+6+x=45
3x +9 =45
3x =36
X=12

Humbug is 2x+6 =30
So prob is 30/45 or 2/3

theoriginalpinkpanther · 08/11/2022 21:49

Hope this is a help

q2
3 eclairs
2x+6 Humbugs
x mints
total = 3+2x+6+x sweets = 9+3x sweets
probability of eclair = 3/(9+3x)
= 1/15
turn both sides upside down (a cheat that works here)
15/1 = (9+3x)/3
multiply both sides by 3
45 = 9+3x
36 = 3x
x = 12
number of humbugs = 30
total sweets = 45
probability of humbug = 30/45 = 2/3

Hopeful16 · 08/11/2022 21:50

@kitchenSink5 @PomPomSugar the square one actually asks the length of the sides so you need to use the value of x back into the equations for the sides. It gives a length of 20cm.

Mañanarama · 08/11/2022 21:51

There must be 45 sweets because there are 3 eclairs. 3/45 = 1/15.

We know there are 3 eclairs and 6 humbugs, so the remaining 36 sweets equates to 3x, therefore x=12.

Humbugs: 2x + 6 = 12 + 12 + 6 = 30.

30/45 is simplified to 2/3.

PomPomSugar · 08/11/2022 21:54

Thank you all so much! I was nearly there with the humbug one!

I made question 3 x=-7, not 7
Because from 5x-4=9x+24, you get -4x=28.
