Silent 999 calls

If you need to make a silent call then dial 999 and press 55 when prompted.

If you do not press 55 the operator will just hang up.

If you dial off a landline the police can trace your call and you do not need to say anything.

But if you are dialling from a mobile then they cannot trace your call and you’ll need to give your whereabouts after pressing 55.

Myself and a few others that I’ve spoken to weren’t aware of this, so I just wanted to let others know too.

Unfortunately, women have dialled 999 when they were being attacked by their partners and died because the police never arrived.

Good info. Hopefully not needed. Can you send messages to 999 yet

There's more info here, dialling 55 is only a thing for mobiles not landlines.

You can text 999 but you need to register first. To register text 'Register' to 999.

If needed here's how to turn off sounds on keypad

Go to settings.
Select Language and Input.
At the keyboard settings tab, select configure input methods.
At Android keyboard, select Settings.
Uncheck Sound on keypress.
Done.
