to think if I’d been a man, the road rage idiot wouldn’t have tried to open my car door?

Never have I been so grateful for my car door locking system.

Driving to a fireworks display yesterday, long queues, country roads, but everyone is being quite chilled out and polite about it all.

I’m making progress down a lane but I’m blocked by a car coming the other way, but it’s ok, I can see behind that car that the cars behind her are reversing and backing up so we can all pass. Everything absolutely fine. Other driver and I smiling at each other.

Except some bloke gets out from a few cars back (he won’t have been able to see what I could see). He comes up to my car, tries twice to open my driver’s door and starts berating me through the window for holding up the traffic. I was petrified afterwards to think what could have happened.

Thankfully after I looked away and don’t engage he went back to his car. The car in front of me reversed and we all we able to proceed on our way.

AIBU to think he wouldn’t have dreamed of doing this had I been a male?

Do you think there is a possibility men don’t like to report that they were assaulted by a woman and so the stats are skewed?

Believe me, millions and millions and millions of women don’t bother reporting being assaulted by men, so you definitely don’t need to worry about the ‘statistics being skewed’. 😑

Babdoc · 06/11/2022 19:50

newnamethanks Grin

TheFarawayNearby · 06/11/2022 20:02

@Witsendwilly, you cannot seriously be arguing in good faith that data shows that most violence is perpetrated by men upon women due to men not reporting violence by women. Unbelievable.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/11/2022 20:14

Well it certainly doesn’t make it any better if he would have done it to a man aswell! I think it’s impossible to say - some men are much more aggressive towards women than to other men, as is well documented, but he could have been someone who’d have picked a fight with anyone.

How scary for you, and what an absolutely dickhead!

What j would say is i couldn’t imagine a woman doing this. Maybe shouting at someone in a car but not trying the door.

majellalos · 06/11/2022 20:17

*The gender isn’t irrelevant.

statistically more violent crime is perpetuated by men.

Statistically men with anger issues are more intimidating and when violent the damage they cause is worse- both to people and property.

it’s ok to be intimidated by men and say so*

yea but most assault cases are done by men towards other men which negates the op and a common mn thought that women get targeted more than men when they don't. A man has much more chance of getting physically attacked walking home at night than a woman.

Even if that were true (some people argue it's the case with romantic partner domestic violence) it wouldn't explain the fact most violent attacks on women are by men.

Or are you arguing that while women are mostly attacked by men, men are mostly attacked by women across all types of violent attacks including strangers attacking strangers?

MarigoldPetals · 06/11/2022 20:21

I’m think of you were a man the outcome would probably have been worse - men very often contain their rage a bit towards women (this is why female police officers are often sent into deal with aggressive men). If you were a man he may well have been even more aggressive.

This was established early in the thread and op accepted it.

Men do attack men.

More men are murdered by strangers (i.e. men they don't know) than women.

Women are mostly murdered by their male partners, new male "dates" or ex partners or sometimes other male family members.

The vast majority of the violent attacks are committed by men, whether the victim is male or female.

Most violence is male on male.
The second biggest category is male on female.

Women are sometimes violent but vastly less often than men.

As embarrassed as I am to admit.....I got out when abused by a bloke during a roadwork queue on a roundabout.....he was hollaring/calling me names/gesticulating that I should go.... there was nowhere to go.....I actually got out of my car....ran up to his window and shouted as loud as I could at him whilst pointing at the situation "WHERE THE FUCK WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO FUCKING GO YOU TWAT"....I was shaking so badly with anger..... but the irony is I probably wouldn't have done it if I myself was a man......YANBU OP... but road rage is a bitch xxx

Thepossibility · 06/11/2022 20:25

I've inherited what is seen as more of a rev head “guys" car from FIL. I haven't had a single incident since, except for idiots trying to race me at the lights.
When I had my little Kia Rio I was raged at all the time. I think it's just assumed I'm a man in this car and a woman in that car. My driving ability hasn't changed.

OneTC · 06/11/2022 20:31

I've had someone try and open my door, I'm a bloke.

Kenneth Noye also didn't let it slow him down.

SD1978 · 06/11/2022 20:44

If it was dark, with headlights on, he wouldn't have known if you were female or male, so probably y would have had a go regardless

vipersnest1 · 06/11/2022 20:46

@Thepossibility, I get that too, as the type of car I have is more usually driven by a man.

Justanotherlurker · 06/11/2022 20:47

I think this 'if I was a man' rhetoric that is creeping up on MN needs to be dailed down somewhat. My Nephew was recently stabbed for being in the 'wrong area', it was instigated by the 2 women who were with the culprit.

A girl gang recently robbed a male oap of his pension by playing the IDPOL narrative, there are arseholes everywhere, if he is at the point of kicking of at someone he would have kicked off at a male as well, instead of trying to go down the sexist angle just call out the twat angle, I've seen just as many women kicking off over inconisiquential shit re driving or parking, it really isnt sex specific other than you wanting it to be on a personal level

FatAnneTheDealer · 06/11/2022 20:57

Oh course it happens to men as well, but it happens to women a lot worse and a lot more aggressively. Been there.

I highly doubt he could see that you were a woman. Maniacs like him who can’t control their tempers wouldn’t have cared who were anyway. I’m sorry this happened to you, but even more sorry whoever was in the car with him perhaps hoping for some nice family time together.

FloydPepper · 06/11/2022 21:28

People are right that the problem is angry men

people are also right that their targets are men and women. I’m a bloke and I’ve had similar. Angry (usually male) idiots will abuse anyone.

Harpydragon · 06/11/2022 21:53

A young bully boy deliberately side swiped my husband when he was driving on the motorway, because DH could not immediately let him in the lane when he wanted to be there.DH didn't stop, because he did not feel it was safe to do so. When he reported it to the police, they said it was a good job he didn't do so, anybody prepared to take that kind of risk on the motorway, would probably have been likely to take it further.

This bloke nearly caused a massive pile up on the motorway because his ego couldn't handle waiting a few seconds.

NameChangeLifeChange · 06/11/2022 21:57

Witsendwilly · 06/11/2022 16:14

Woman get angry and approach cars as well you know.

You should really be asking “who are these people”. The persons sex or gender or whatever is completely irrelevant

It happens with men far far far more

gloriamoi · 08/11/2022 13:26

There is a strange view on mn that men are shielded and won't be harmed. This is not only statistically wrong but the vast majority of street fights or physical attacks I've ever seen happening is man on man.

Exactly. Some view women as always being hard done by. I was recently in a taxi and a guy completely raging blocked us in and got out and came over. He looked at me and told the driver that it's his lucky day that there's a woman in the vehicle. So yabu, to feel women are more prone to this sort of stuff.

MavisChunch29 · 08/11/2022 15:00

Yep. I always keep the door locked so people can't open from the outside. My mum had someone try to open her door at traffic lights years ago - probably trying to steal her handbag. Particularly sensitive to this when I've just got into the car in a car park, I have my finger hovering over the door lock button straight away.

Men drive far far far more. So even if the percentage of dickhead drivers is equal between male and female, there will always be more male road ragers.

MavisChunch29 · 08/11/2022 15:02

Of course there are more angry, violent men, than there are women. Look at the prison figures. Or are women just really good at getting away with it?
