to think if I’d been a man, the road rage idiot wouldn’t have tried to open my car door?

Never have I been so grateful for my car door locking system.

Driving to a fireworks display yesterday, long queues, country roads, but everyone is being quite chilled out and polite about it all.

I’m making progress down a lane but I’m blocked by a car coming the other way, but it’s ok, I can see behind that car that the cars behind her are reversing and backing up so we can all pass. Everything absolutely fine. Other driver and I smiling at each other.

Except some bloke gets out from a few cars back (he won’t have been able to see what I could see). He comes up to my car, tries twice to open my driver’s door and starts berating me through the window for holding up the traffic. I was petrified afterwards to think what could have happened.

Thankfully after I looked away and don’t engage he went back to his car. The car in front of me reversed and we all we able to proceed on our way.

AIBU to think he wouldn’t have dreamed of doing this had I been a male?

didn’t engage

How scary, he sounds like a complete dick op.

28to1 · 06/11/2022 16:07

and we were all able

This happens to men all the time as well.

Some people are dicks, I doubt he even bothered to look through the window and was just acting on adrenaline and instinct. He sounds like a tool.

FuckabethFuckor · 06/11/2022 16:08

Oh I don't know, my brother had something similar and a knife pulled on him once by a raging driver. And he's a pretty big guy.

I think when they get that raged up they don't see the sex of who's behind the wheel.

Glad you got away alright, it's really horrible when that kind of thing happens.

Calandor · 06/11/2022 16:09

Nah they do it to men as well. Let's be honest, someone who gets angry enough to come to someone's car is deep in an anger issue. They don't care who they can scream at.

Discovereads · 06/11/2022 16:10

This happens to men as well. He decided to leave his car and go to your car and open your door from several cars back where he couldn’t have seen what sex you were. Usually when someone is that enraged they don’t care.

MyLovelyPen · 06/11/2022 16:10

Yes I’m afraid they do it to men too 🤬. I know at least two men that’s happened too. Absolute arseholes. My door is manual locking but I always lock them when in slow moving traffic 😩.

jetadore · 06/11/2022 16:10

He probably couldn’t see you were a woman from a few cars back, but I’ll bet he’d have behaved 100% differently had you turned out to be a male rugby player.

Winter2020 · 06/11/2022 16:11

I wouldn't be so sure.

Did you see the story a week or two ago about two blokes in America in a road rage incident that shot each others daughters? But then I suppose you could wonder if they would have shot them if they were sons? Probably?

The bloke was a disgrace to behave as he did towards anybody male or female.

Alsonification · 06/11/2022 16:11

Just last week I had a guy come onto a roundabout in front of me without looking. He missed me by a sliver so I beeped him. As I drove up the road behind him he slammed on his brakes & starts reversing. I immediately locked my doors & held up my phone to record. I was terrified he'd hit me & I'd be blamed. He then stopped again & started getting out of his car. I held up the phone so he could see me recording & once he realised he gave me the finger & jumped back in his car & sped away.

I was so angry.

28to1 · 06/11/2022 16:13

Gosh fair enough.

It was really scary at the time! Who are these men getting so angry on their way to a family fireworks display?!

What’s scary is wondering what exactly he was going to do had the door been unlocked. What was his gameplan?? Ugh.

Woman get angry and approach cars as well you know.

You should really be asking “who are these people”. The persons sex or gender or whatever is completely irrelevant

PicaNewName · 06/11/2022 16:16

You would have. I saw a man cutting in front of someone at the roundabout and blocking their way, got out of his car and opened the door of the other one. Thankfully the driver reacted quickly and managed to drive off closing his door when far enough.

AppleKatie · 06/11/2022 16:18

The gender isn’t irrelevant.

statistically more violent crime is perpetuated by men.

Statistically men with anger issues are more intimidating and when violent the damage they cause is worse- both to people and property.

it’s ok to be intimidated by men and say so.

ferneytorro · 06/11/2022 16:18

Happened to my husband, don’t think in that case the bloke had a game plan, the red must had descended. Two blokes behind us once got out of their respective cars and squared up to each other. Husband (ex Bobby) stopped got out and said words to the effect of come on chaps don’t be silly. When he got back in the car he said the look of relief on their faces that someone had intervened and got them to have a word with them selves was absolutely palpable! They’d no desire to fight.

ferneytorro · 06/11/2022 16:19

Red mist I meant to say.

BagOfBollocks · 06/11/2022 16:21

I voted YABU because I live in a city where road rage is unfortunately rife, and many a bloke has been dragged from a car and beaten or stabbed.

I'm so sorry this happened to you OP.

Yes, you’re right - women are just as violent and testosterone-driven as men.

I’ve seen loads of women get out of cars and go and front up to men, threatening violent.

Oh, that’s right, I’m on planet Earth, so I’ve literally never seen that.

Funnily enough I typed ‘people,’ then changed it to ‘men.’ Because this kind of thing is in no way a 50-50 split between the sexes!

UnstableCarHouse · 06/11/2022 16:23

You’ve no way of knowing he wouldn’t have done it to a man. Just the other day I was in a taxi and an irate driver tried pretty much the same thing with the male tax driver.

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 06/11/2022 16:26

I had similar once. Passed test. A week later driver up my arse because i was doing 28 in a 30. Got to traffic lights and he got out and opened my door. I pulled closed and locked doors he thumped window . Ds was young. He was crying. Lucky im a, in the words of my dm ' a hard, stone hearted mare'
But i kept cool and drove to dh works. ( was on way there anyway) pulled in as the guy had followed me shouting out at me. Let's just say dh heard and the guy got what he deserved.

HerbErtlinger · 06/11/2022 16:29

My DP had someone open his car door, kick his centre console and stole the bottle of wine on his passenger seat in a road rage incident.
Sounds like an unnerving experience for you OP, I would have been shaken up in similar circumstances

Cinders88 · 06/11/2022 16:37

It happens to men too, for sure. DH had someone approach his van to start an argument .. until DH got out to welcome him. The bloke did an about-turn back to his vehicle.

I do encourage DH to avoid these kind of situations (he doesn’t back down from someone starting a confrontation) because you don’t know what the other person is capable of, but a lot of times it’s just a self-righteous melt who would back off if anyone actually stood up to them.
