How would you phrase this ?

For the sum (10 - 2)
Would you say
A) "What is 2 takeaway from 10?"
Or
B) "What is 10 takeaway 2?"

Colloquially most people call these sorts of calculations 'sums' - we all know what the op means. Pedantic people need to sod off to their special board.

I wouldn't say "takeaway" unless I was speaking to imbeciles or very young children. The mathematical term is minus.

It’s not. “Do your sums” means number work in general.

Why do you ask ?

It was incorrect, you can sum up negative numbers.

Ten minus two could never be twelve but two away from ten could be twelve. Its why correct language is important.

That means two units either side of ten. So if a runner is two miles away from a ten mile point they can be at eight miles or twelve. A yacht can be two miles east or west of a bouy ie two miles away from the bouy.
