DH LEFT DD (6) ON HER OWN TODAY IN THE HOUSE

sorry for caps in title

dd1 is of school today with a bad cold, dh is at home (also ill) i went to work and dd2 came with me. i work in a nursery about 40 metres from my house. you come out my door cross the road pass a couple of houses and there you are.

at closing time i told dd to get her coat on as we were about to go home when dh appeared, i asked where dd1 was and he said lying on the couch

i did not want to make a fuss when all the mums were leaving and waited till home to say something, he thinks i am bu, it was for a couple of minutes and only over the road. i his words "whats the worst that could happen"

i think 6 is to young, we stay on a busy road and i was worried that she would get scared and try and cross the road to get to us. i dont think i am being dramatic, i did not think that the house would explode or that someone would snatch her but surley at 6 she should not be left like this.

am i being unreasonable, i know i am to protective of both dd's but i am sure i am right on this one???

Has anyone considered the risk to a child left alone if a meteorite should hit the earth. Unthinkable Could happen!

FAQ · 29/01/2008 15:54

ahhh - PPH - DS3 couldn't have been more than 3/4 months old........so the "instinct" was still there........had it happened with DS1 or 2 (or perhaps even DS3 now) it would probably have deserted me and we'd have bounced down independently of each other

Justine888 · 29/01/2008 15:54

ive got splinters all up and down my arse. FAQ is a wimp. A flight of stairs is nothing compared to what Ive been though.

FAQ · 29/01/2008 15:56

oh god I've just figured out Justine.........she's an Aussie........who doesn't like English mums

Justine888 · 29/01/2008 15:56

I tell my kids NEVER to play with fallen meteorites... you dont know where they've been or who else has been touching them!

Justine888 · 29/01/2008 15:57

Yeah but no but yeah but

scottishmummy · 29/01/2008 15:57

splinters you say - eeekkk!and all you were doing was warning us mums about fire/strangers/chemical^spills/alien abduction - and hah all you get is derision...well i will be sorry when the wee silver alien carries my wee one away

Justine888 · 29/01/2008 15:58

Come on.... FAQ? I mean, who does?

Miaou · 29/01/2008 15:58

I see the argument has moved on a bit from the OP - however here is my 2pworth. Whether or not to leave your dd at home alone is to my mind a moot point - it's something you'll always find different opinions about on here. But personally I think it's a decision that parents should make together, and have the "be safe and sensible" talk with said child first. I don't think it's unreasonable of you to go "What? WHAT???" when this decision is arbitrarily taken out of your control. (However I accept that dh and I make every parenting decision together and this is not everyone's style, but that's my take on it!)

Justine888 · 29/01/2008 15:59

Scottishmummy, now come on luv. You bought up the chemical spills and alien abductions. I cant take the credit for those two pearlers!

scottishmummy · 29/01/2008 15:59

hoi Justine is FAQ onto summit? are you an Aussie who doesnt like english mums - what about scottish scoffs at aliens mum

Tamum · 29/01/2008 16:00

I don't think that's true about babysitters having to be 16 in Scotland, is it? I didn't think so (even though ours are always older), and I know lots of people who use 15 year olds who are not natural law breakers.

Justine888 · 29/01/2008 16:00

What would Dr Phil say people?

Justine888 · 29/01/2008 16:01

scottishmummy · 29/01/2008 16:01

scottishmummy · 29/01/2008 16:04

got the baby sitting age from this site - hope it is accurate cumbria council",

kindersurprise · 29/01/2008 16:06

I would say that my DD is quite sensible (at almost 6yo) and, as I have stated have left her alone for short periods of time.

Yes, someone could come to the door. But that could happen when I am at home.

In fact it did. I was upstairs putting washing away last week when I heard voices downstairs. I came down to find a friend of DH (also a neighbour, so used to popping in and out) sitting at the dining table drinking a beer. DD had let him in and got him a beer.

I am pretty sure that she would not be so welcoming with a stranger, and she was told not to open the door when I am not downstairs.

Miaou · 29/01/2008 16:06

thank you baffy!!

Justine888 · 29/01/2008 16:08

Kindersurprise - but what a hostess you're little girl is!

scottishmummy · 29/01/2008 16:08

Oi justine does my bum look big in this dress...throw a couple of sangers on the barbie an get the VB oot the fridge...i will get the irn-bru

Tamum · 29/01/2008 16:08

That's weird. It says on these Scottish sites that there is no legal age for babysitters: Dumfries and Galloway, Central Scotland police and several more I can't be bothered to link to

scottishmummy · 29/01/2008 16:11

Yes i dont actually think there is a minimum age for being left alone. oops.darn internet

Justine888 · 29/01/2008 16:11

it's "snags" darl' - not sangers.
VB's not really my cuppa tea. I'd like a noice glarse of card-on-ay if you've got one?
