Guardian reporting that the rcn strike has resulted in a yes vote and we'll be striking before Christmas.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/nov/05/nurses-across-uk-vote-to-strike-in-first-ever-national-action?CMP=ShareiOSAppp_Other

Patient's emergency care will be protected but it's a strike vote

Band 5 nurses get 2 rises. One at 2 years qualified one at 4 years qualified. There are no further rises as a band 5 unless you progress to band 6 which isnt a given. Band 6 covers specialist nurses or junior ward management roles, quality nurses etc. but progressing to band 6 doesnt just come with time qualified. They are specific and limited jobs. The vast majority of ward nurses are band 5 and their maximum pay is at 4 years qualified.

ohfourfoxache · 06/11/2022 00:19

I’m at the top of band 6 - essentially “admin”

I’ve got a Masters. I worked bloody hard to get it.

it absolutely disgusts me that my nursing colleagues, who are responsible for life and death, who look after us at our most unwell and who have been at the front line through a pandemic, are on less than I am

I am a member of the union. I have voted yes. Not for me - my job is a walk in the park in comparison. I’ve voted yes because the people I work with deserve more. And we either support them, or we all lose.

Twillow · 06/11/2022 00:26

Yes.
Perhaps the bloody pointless army can stand in.

Lurkerlot · 06/11/2022 00:36

Yes. Seriously thinking, they should strike on a Thursday, and then people who support them can stand on their doorsteps at 8pm and bandy some pans.

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 06/11/2022 00:37

Simply. Yes.

RhannionKPSS · 06/11/2022 00:38

Doctors should strike as well, long hours for appalling pay.

VivX · 06/11/2022 00:38

Yes

generalh · 06/11/2022 00:43

Anyone should be able to withdraw their labour to improve their pay and conditions.

beachcitygirl · 06/11/2022 00:45

I support the nurses & in fact ALL striking workers 💯

antelopevalley · 06/11/2022 00:57

Band 5 is £27,055 to £32,934.
A nurse with 30 years experience is not on £12.19 per hour. Their take-home pay might be that once you take off tax, NI, pension contributions, student loan. But saying it is paid £12.31 an hour is misleading. £12.31 for a 37.5 week is £24,004. £8k more than this is significant.

The take home is lower than outsiders might expect because of the level of pension contributions, they are higher than statutory, although it is optional to be in the pension scheme.

Band 5 is the lowest band for nurses.

I clearly stated take home pay not gross.

Band 5 is the band for most ward nurses. Regardless of years of experience, a ward is made up with the majority of nurses at band 5 regardless of time qualified or experience. Your suggestion that an ITU nurse is on £29+ an hour is a joke, Its not true, ITU is the same as all other areas and mostly nursed by nurses at band 5 level.

Hunt is back. It's a certainty

Yes, I absolutely support them.

Can I just say its not just nurses who need a decent pay rise, domestics ward clerks etc who are essential to the smooth running of a ward and who often increasingly go above and beyond doing stuff that is definitely not in their job description due to lack to of nursing staff are only on band 2 which is only just over the minimum wage.

Completely agree. Most people don't realise how many Band 2 & 3 roles there are within the NHS. Not only HCA's. The vast number of NHS workers are 'unqualified' lower banding's, something like 40%. Working alongside and under the same conditions and limitations as nurses. Our band 2 are paid £10.93 an hour, which translates to £9.44 after tax, less than minimum wage. Clinical band 2's & 3's are still expected to do everything a nurse does, apart from cannulation (unless band 3) and drug administration.

I 10000% support the nurses striking. I hope my colleagues and myself in radiology will follow soon.

OxanaVorontsova · 06/11/2022 02:05

Absolutely yes fully support them. Teachers have been balloted this week too, with action after Christmas depending on the outcome.

Madwife123 · 06/11/2022 02:27

Absolutely support them.

Us midwives won’t be far behind you, we are being balloted now.

Like others have said it’s not just about pay it’s the conditions, the appalling staffing levels. The fact that the U.K. has one of the highest stillbirth rates in the developed world. The fact that maternity care is abysmal for most women. The fact that it’s now normal to be caring for 2-3 women in labour when this is proven to be unsafe. It’s time we make this known and demand change. Without action the NHS will cease to exist very soon.

SD1978 · 06/11/2022 02:40

Of course nurses can't strike. You knew what you were signing up to, and expecting to have wages increase as a graduate, with responsibility to ensure patients don't deteriorate, all whilst also ensuring compliance with government targets not designed to ever work when people are involved was obviously what you already knew so why are they complaining now? And given they all sit around, ignore people in pain, never do anything useful and are just lazy and stupid, this is just a ridiculous notion to strike.............and if you didn't get the sarcasm, please be aware it's definitely dripping there......

Nat6999 · 06/11/2022 03:01

Yes, the NHS has been underfunded for years & since many of the jobs & procedures that were in the past done by a doctor have been passed down to nurses that were already overworked & underpaid. Nurses deserve every penny they can fight for.

TurquoiseBeach · 06/11/2022 05:20

Yes. Shame it's come to this, but that's not on the nurses.

Frootlepootle · 06/11/2022 06:36

@antelopevalley why would I lie ?PPs are right in saying that most wards including ICU are staffed by band 5s. We probably have more band 6s on here than anywhere else because of the nature of the job (in my head something like 9 or 10 plus 5 band 7s to manage almost 100 staff). The rest of us are band 5s. Promotion is not automatic.

Autumnisclose · 06/11/2022 06:44

Yes I fully support them.

RedRiverShore2 · 06/11/2022 06:50

Yes I do, I don't support the railway workers though

Ljc1985 · 06/11/2022 06:54

Yes!

Changerofthename1 · 06/11/2022 06:57

I do support them overall yes. Not sure about the salary but conditions definitely.

borntobequiet · 06/11/2022 06:58

Yes.
