DD (5 yo) has been sick since Tue evening. Low grade fever the first 2 days, has been off school since Wed. Her condition has been worsening since then with fever going up every day. Since yesterday she has developed diarrhea, but nothing too serious. Went to the toilet a few times, but no severe tummy ache or anything.
Last night her fever went up to 40 and she was very very poorly. Didn't want to eat, was very thirsty and fell asleep really quickly (extremely unusual for her). This morning she was miserable again with fever and I gave her Nurofen and took her to a walk in centre. By the time we got there, the Nurofen kicked in and she felt well. She looked happy, she was talking to everyone in the clinic, joking with the doctors and they said oh, she looks so well and happy. Did a few basic checks and said it's probably a tummy bug and it's going to pass on its own. We left and I took her for a walk for some fresh air and had some lunch.
As we were finishing our lunch she started complaining about being cold despite having 3 layers of clothes on her and feeling really unwell. Fast forward 3 hours she is bed ridden. Is sleeping right next to me, this is her second nap this afternoon. Fever has gone up to 39 before I gave her Calpol. Woke in between naps saying she is very sick and feeling dizzy.
Can a tummy bug make you this unwell?! I know a few kids who had it and no one had high temperature for 4 days. I'm questioning the diagnosis and I feel they haven't really taken her condition seriously as she looked well when we were there. This happened to us a few months ago and she was finally diagnosed and given the right treatment after 3 hospital visits.
