3 Hour Blackouts

If they happen, they are saying they'll be planned between 4-7pm. Surely this is the most ridiculous time, when most people will still be at work/ travelling home/making tea etc.
Any genius thoughts to get through a 3 hour blackout besides blankets and 🕯
I feel really sad for vulnerable people on their own if it happens 😪

Reasonably the former should have provisions in place for sudden power ages anyway (I believe its possible to apply for vulnerable status in this scenario and people are being encouraged to do so)

We have 'vulnerable status' but in the big scheme of things, 3 hours isn't too much of a problem (member of the household reliant on medication that needs to be kept cold). The real issue is what having this status actually means. My understanding is that in the event of long term blackout, we would be provided with some kind of interim power (so a generator of some kind I guess) but whether or not enough of this interim power generators actually exists is another issue. We were never asked to quantify/qualify our needs so as far as the power company is concerned, we're as vulnerable as the next person. They have not reached out to us and I am not aware of anyone else with the condition having been contacted either (on a Facebook group with thousands of sufferers). Like I say, it won't be the end of the world for us (although if the medication heats up, we will need additional supplies at a cost to the NHS) but for others it is going to be far more of an immediate problem. They should be planning for it. I am not sure what the reality is, however. Certainly, we have seen no evidence of it.

My letter is Q and on one day the power cut is 6 hours in one go, 6-12midnight. So long as I’m forewarned it really doesn’t bother me too much. It’s when it unexpectedly goes off for 18 hours (as it did last winter on a number of occasions) that pusses me off.
I’m sure that the vast majority of people will mange fine; you can always find an alternative place to work, eat, shop etc if necessarily, in an unaffected area or arrange with friends or relatives to house share when they have power and you don’t and vice versa.

Where are you seeing that? I'm not seeing two blocks in a row until level 7 of disconnection.

Find your load block letter here

Find your outage times on the table as they are on the current plans. Simples.

Whats load block letter and where can I find a clearer version of that table please?

Yes @Abraxan , I’m in S which shows 4 outages - early hours Friday (fine, I’ll be asleep) then Sat pm, Sat evening, Sun pm. Would bugger up the weekend a bit!

we're making assumptions - that list may be for more general blackouts. They've mentioned specifically peak hours only (to save gas peaker plants so the gas can be reserved for heating most likely); So its possible that plan wil not be used at all as they won't be doing blackouts in the morning/early hours (no real need)

In that case its most likely that there will be a simpler setup of 'these 7 areas of the UK' each gets a 4-7pm block on one day of the week. You'll get emailed if its your area, plus lots of local publicity so you will struggle to miss its coming.

I agree with the logic of this.

Its the high peaks not a general supply that are likely to be our issue.

Can I just say we are on our second unplanned power cut of the week.
We managed 3 days without one that was good.

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/11/2022 22:31

I agree too, this seems more likely as an approach
