Am I being sensitive about this?

My DS attends a local school in the nursery class. He’s one of the oldest there as he’s just turned 4. Some of them only turned 3 in the summer.

He has traits of neurodiversity, but nothing diagnosed yet. Possible ASD/ADHD but he doesn’t have a problem communicating or making friendships/being social.

At his previous nursery (private one) he had lots of friends and seemed fairly popular there.

Now at this new nursery attached to the school, he’s made a friend that he talks about all the time at home.
Today in the playground at pick up I heard the mum of that boy talking to another mum about how much he talks about her son. And how they love playing together and that they should get together outside school. I feel really sad as I think my son is trying to make friends and seems not to be making the connections I thought.
All of them will be in this class in reception and beyond.

I just don’t want him to be like I was at school, constantly trying hard to make friends but always being pushed away or used and then dropped, which happened regularly.

It hurts my heart to think of him being excluded and not having friends ☹️

Oh my, I really feel for you. My (now 17) DS struggled at primary because of his Autism. I'm not going to be able to give you a solution but I can reassure you that he has lots of time to make friends with understanding families. Sometimes having to wait for the good people to show up helps you recognise just how wonderful they are.

I’d say you’re definitely being sensitive but it’s understandable, especially as you yourself struggle socially too.

One thing you will need to start is trying to be a bit more resilient about this, as unfortunately it will only get worse as they get older
