Am I stupid? Gas cooker

So it turns out we have a dodgy gas range cooker, brand new a couple of years ago, it's a belling farmhouse style range cooker, I love it !

The past few months I've been getting letters stating to only use the grill with the door open, due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, I thought this was standard with a grill? You keep the door open whilst it's cooking otherwise it cuts off doesn't it ?

Anyway, now I've got a letter stating the cooker is unsafe and I need to contact the company asap to book an engineer to come out and modify it. Again, saying you can use it but to only use the grill with the door open, this is what's confusing me, who uses the grill with the door closed anyway?

Now I'm worrying I've got some dodgy cooker and feel like telling them to take it back

So my aibu is - am i stupid and must've been using the grill wrong in the first place ??

Has anyone else got this cooker and received the same letter ? I've looked online and there is news reports about it and how 66,000 people have got these types of cookers and will all need modifying

I don’t have a range cooker (not that posh 🤣) but I always grill with the door open.

CluelessAtClothing · 03/11/2022 13:13

Our oven (electric) you must grill with the door closed (the fan comes on) it used to always be the norm you'd grill with the door open. Aside from that it sounds awful, I be frightened to use it based on the letters. But I hate gas and apart from central heating have no gas anywhere in the house.

SpinningFloppa · 03/11/2022 13:13

Who is sending the letters? How would they know?

FatAnneTheDealer · 03/11/2022 13:18

Old fashioned gas cookers required grilling with door open. Newer ones often do not.

However the manufacturer has obviously discovered a fault in the cooker and needs you to book an appointment for modification. You will be getting these emails because you gave your address to them when you purchased or registered your guarantee.

Book the appointment. In the meantime, as instructed, grill with the door open. When the modification is made, grill according to usual instructions - which in the case of this cooker, is apparently grill with door shut.

My last gas, range style cooker was grill with door shut type.

This is the letter.

I've never known a grill that could be used with the door closed, so that's where my confusion is coming from ! So maybe people have been assuming this cooker is the type you can close and this is where the risks are happening.

But yes it's made me question the safety of the entire cooker now

When you register the new appliance for the manufacturer warranty they will keep a record, so that’s how they will have the details so send out a letter. It’s just like a car recall if there’s a fault that’s been identified post production.

Saying that, when we moved in here we had an old tumble dryer left behind by the seller. Then when there were all the issues with dangerous tumble dryers a few years ago we had a letter, addressed to me personally, to advise us to book a repair to it. To this day I’ve no idea how they knew my name🤷‍♀️ I hadn’t bought any other appliances for this property from that manufacturer, so couldn’t be linked that way.

FatToFitPart3 · 03/11/2022 13:36

I don’t think I’d be too worried op. It does sound like people have been closing the door and creating safety concerns, so I imagine they want to just fit something that will shut off the gas flow if the grill door is closed.

Im very jealous of your range oven. I used to have one, but this kitchen is too small for one. Really miss it, especially the big wok ring/grill plate part.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 03/11/2022 13:41

When we did our kitchen the supplier suggested a Neff oven that could only grill with the door shut and would cut out if you opened the door! Fortunately I spotted that and we switched to a Bosch that let you grill with the door open.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 03/11/2022 13:52

We had a new Belling a couple of years ago - not a range cooker - and a few months after we got it we had a letter asking us not to use the oven as a part needed to be replaced, and that there was a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. We have CO alarm anyway, but did as they asked and someone came out, replaced the part and it was fine.

bellingcookers · 04/11/2022 11:07

Thanks everyone. I will book the engineer to come out. Just worries you abit receiving letters like that, clearly someone has used it with the door closed and they're being safe, which is of course a good thing.

I've got the belling range cooker the same as you and have also been receiving the same letters. I filled the form out for the modification a week later I've had no contact from him. So much for it being urgent . I would never recommend that cooker to anyone. It's paper thin, the feet on the pan supports melt and fall off, the door hinges had to be replaced, the glass door was replaced due to a fault, the paint melted on the centre strip on top of the cooker and the grill pan metal thing the food goes on has flaked and is copper underneath. Poor quality.

bellingcookers · 17/11/2022 09:31

@Guineapigmam I also haven't heard a thing either ! I couldn't get through on the phone so I emailed them, got a reply a few days later and nothing since...

Sounds horrendous ! To be honest i haven't had any issues with ours it's a nice cooker apart from it now eating the gas with the energy prices !

Let me know if you get a reply...
