My dad is 85.
He has a bus pass.
He was coming to my house last night for tea.
He got on bus and his pass wouldn't work (it has a tiny rip in)
It was valid for two years still.
Normally you tap your pass and they let you on.
Obviously when he was tapping it wasn't registering.
So he had to get off and go home to get his wallet.
He was coming to mine so didn't think he needed anything but his pass.

It made zero difference to that bus driver
Aibu to think it's a shitty thing to do to a elderly man.

I hate people sometimes.
Completely unnecessary, what a horrible bus driver.

I hope your dad is ok.

Briefly reading this thread. Awful that people should be worried about their job for making a human judgement. To slightly correct anyone saying the journey is free, it isn't- it is subsidised. In NI that is by Department for Infrastructure so depends what part of the country you are in. So it is fair that passes are used to allow subsidies to be claimed. However, any system needs to have discretion built in. You still get some awful drivers. A couple of times I have stepped in and paid fares for others when there have been issues. Appalling treatment of this gentleman.

I had a similar problem with my son. Zip card was breaking, new one on order and even a screenshot of the email confirming a new one being processed.
Miserable git told my son he would have to walk to school. Making him late.

Maybe the driver is at risk of a written warning and losing their job when they shouldn’t be. Raise it with bus company

deerspotting · 06/11/2022 21:24

When I was 18 or 19, bus driver didn't let me in because he didn't have change from a 50 (only cash I had), it was the last bus that night. Spent €35 on a taxi instead of €5 bus but hey treat yo self girl🙃

My daughter's phone was out of battery, she tried to pay a bus driver with a £10 note and he didn't have change so refused her a ride. She was 15, stranded for 80 mins til i could get her and I was furious. The bus company told me they expect drivers to provide carriage in those circumstances and it would be "looked into". I hope it was and he was disciplined, he was just horrible.

Awful behaviour by that driver. Some bus drivers are okay but others can be really unpleasant IME.

Drivers can be sacked on the spot for deliberately carrying passengers without a valid pass or ticket. A pass that isn't readable isn't valid.

Everything is on CCTV and companies will go out of their way to catch drivers out.

The OPs father could have chosen to pay.

Mind, I would have let him on free, you could travel on my bus with a library ticket.

Possibly part of why I am now an ex bus driver. No wonder they can't get drivers.

Very shitty but there’s nothing you can do now so best to just let it go.

of course there is - OP can complain to the bus company and they can educate staff to prevent this happening again.
’shitty’ things like this will continue to happen unless people do something about it.

Same as what the few drivers I know, and are looking for another job say about the company round here.
Forced to enforce shitty policies at risk of losing your job if you don't and just take a look at this thread for the attitude and abuse if you do.

Not restricted to bus companies but they're not learning that treating employees like this means they can't get them are they? Yet people are short sighted and will shout at the bus driver when the service is crap because there's less drivers, ridiculous rules and meaning they don't want to do the job anymore either.
Too wrapped up in name calling and dishing out vitriol to an unknown who's motivation we have no idea about. But because he works in customer service that motivation must simply be that he's out to ruin someone's day.

And we wonder why customer service is going downhill - no autonomy, no respect and then blamed for it.
