Bus driver wouldn't let my dad on bus aibu to think he is a jobsworth?

My dad is 85.
He has a bus pass.
He was coming to my house last night for tea.
He got on bus and his pass wouldn't work (it has a tiny rip in)
It was valid for two years still.
Normally you tap your pass and they let you on.
Obviously when he was tapping it wasn't registering.
So he had to get off and go home to get his wallet.
He was coming to mine so didn't think he needed anything but his pass.

It made zero difference to that bus driver
Aibu to think it's a shitty thing to do to a elderly man.

There’s some first class cunts on this thread. Humanity is truly dead.

AutumnLea Thank you for your input. You work for a decent bus company with decent drivers it seems. The one I use uses the same logic too. SleepingStandingUp. Rubbish lots of 85 years old are not fit and healthy, as the average age of death for men in the UK is 82. The vast majority of people in the UK will have some medical problem at 85 if they live that long, with mobility issues being the main one. They the elderly are also much more likely to fall when mobile aka walking even short distances, this is due to aging causing balance issues, medication for other illnesses can cause balance issues as well and falls are the biggest cause of death for the elderly as their bones are more brittle. They are also much more at risk from cold, what if a sudden downpour had happened, we are in late Autumn now. OP's father may have breathing issues, quite a few older people I know have them and if you have breathing issues like COPD you have sit down as walking makes you breathless.

You seem to have an empathy bypass or maybe believe that OP's father should not get free travel because you don't?. Even my grandmother, who aged very well said to me as a young girl that getting older made life so much more difficult in hidden ways so cut OP father some slack.

SleepingStandingUp · 03/11/2022 17:47

@FernlovingNodosaur I've already said he should have a way to book the guy onto the bus so he can ride, and I was talking about bus passes, they work the same whether they're free or not.

Surely the issue if ops Dad is so old and fragile is him being out alone in the dark and cold so late at night. He could just have easily have had a bus break down so had to wait 30 minutes for the next one in the wind and rain.

ProFannyTea · 03/11/2022 17:58

Honestly people, stop making things up. At no point has op referred to her father as vulnerable. It's just the rest of you all making that bit up to try and turn it into an attack on a poor helpless old man. Read the terms and conditions of holding a pass rather than inventing what you think they say.

herbygarden · 03/11/2022 18:07

This is absolutely nuts @ProFannyTea my Dad is 84 and I would be absolutely fuming if this happened to him! I would make a formal complaint and escalate it as high as possible. If it is some stupid company policy then it needs to be changed and if it's just an a**ehole bus driver, he should be spoken to!

He's automatically vulnerable from the bus driver's perspective because of his age. Nobody is making anything up. There's no need to establish vulnerability here it's a given.

FernlovingNodosaur · 03/11/2022 18:10

SleepingStandingUp So you admit that 85 year olds are vulnerable then yes? So the driver should have let a vulnerable person like him board the bus for the sake of slight tear right? A bus breaking down is an act of god though bus companies should keep their fleet in good order of course but a driver like the OP mentioned is simply being a man being a thoughtless dick Also young people like wheelchair users can be vulnerable in the same way that OP's father is. Should they stay in just in case the bus breaks down too or is it only the elderly who should stay at home?

PurpleButterflyWings · 03/11/2022 18:28

YANBU at all @oohopo What a horrible way to treat ANYone, let alone an elderly man. And yes the bus driver WAS a jobsworth. And what a silly thing one particular poster said ... 'because he is/was a key worker - you're not allowed to call him a jobsworth.' He IS one, so it's perfectly acceptable to call him one.

Hope your dad's OK now!

PurpleButterflyWings · 03/11/2022 18:31

@Canthave2manycats

It's shocking that any bus driver would treat an elderly passenger clearly entitled to concessionary travel, just because 'computer says no'!!!

Exactly! There was not a single reason for the gentleman to have not been allowed on the bus. Not one!

PurpleButterflyWings · 03/11/2022 18:36

DoubleBuggyDriver · 03/11/2022 16:38

People are biting my head off for saying bus driver wasn’t in the wrong for following the rules? Okay then🤣 next time the cashier at Tesco should let me off just because I’m 5p short then

Not even remotely the same. Silly comparison. The gentleman HAD HIS PASS, but it wouldn't scan. Very likely was not his fault!!!! As a few people have said, you sound totally devoid of empathy. Cold, and 'matter-of-fact.'

Life is full of nuances and twists and turns, and you seem like the type who is 'everything is black or white for me - no deviating!' Can't stand this kind of insufferable personality! What the bus driver did was completely out of order, and bloody nasty.

happyjules · 03/11/2022 18:43

As a bus driver myself, yes, please do complain. I and my colleagues I'm sure would let him on . On most, if not all modern ticket machines there is a facility to log the pass manually so the company still gets the seven from the council.

At 84 he is vulnerable.

Halloween Hmm

You also sound like a jobsworth.

YANBU. My lucky friends in London with their over 60s passes say that trying to use it even an hour or so before it's valid generally elicits an eye roll and 'go on, then'. They are referred to as 'Twirlies'.

People who don't adhere to the T&Cs are why some bus companies crack down.

Survey99 · 03/11/2022 20:22

SpinningFloppa · 03/11/2022 13:15

I’m in London, it’s free for children in education so yes it does!

If they have a pass. What if the parent doesn't want them to have free travel as they might use it to run off or go somewhere they shouldn't be. Surely the driver has a duty of care to not allow children to travel without parents permission (a pass).

We have the same in Scotland and many parents have not given their younger children passes as they don't want them to have a pass that allows their child to travel anywhere in Scotland they like without their knowledge.

That’s not a vulnerable situation though is it, unless you would literally starve to death because you were 5p short!

That’s not a vulnerable situation though is it, unless you would literally starve to death because you were 5p short!

Unfortunately, sometimes 5p can be like 5million to find.

yesterday, the country was told that the interest rate has gone up again.

For my little family, it is over £100 a month, (which means for us, less heating, less food, less fun and more work) some of my friends are saying the hike is nearer £400/£500 a month. One friend WhatsApped last night that their mortgage is now £1200 a month more than last year - they can’t see the light at the tunnel anymore.

it’s very, very difficult out there for lots of friends/colleagues/people.

Calling someone a jobsworth, because they need the money to pay bills, keep the roof over their head, keep the family warm and clothed, is just/more disturbing/disgusting as many find the original post.

Im thrilled that the ones belittling a fellow human, (who may have less income than outgoings, and following the rules because they are just keeping the bailiffs at bay) have so much money, that they are not relying on employer/tax credits/dhss/self employed rely on customers.

Last night, like many others, I was in tears, Christmas is round the corner, Santa is expected to bring a range of goodies - I think his sleigh is going to break down this year.

The washing machine broke last week, we have bought a new one ((£169), we had an Electra one as a wedding present, which lasted years) We are very pleased with it, but it has to be paid for in full by the 30th November or interest will go on (more money) and we want/need the card clean for the next “emergency” - probably the cooker, it’s over 20years old, and the flames aren’t blue anymore.

i never understood before why people go missing and never get found - I truly understand it now - life is hard fucking work at times, I don’t know how my friends are going to meet their mortgage obligations and keep everything and family happy.

I’m blessed that there is Christmas work so I can work 10-12 hours a day, 7 days a week. I can even work on the 25th/26th December this year, and I probably will do it, not for extra presents, but so we don’t lose our home, as the interest rates will probably go up again. I know not everyone is in that position and people WILL lose their home next year.

bus drivers tell me working in the warehouse I work in pays more than they get - I really hope they are lying.

MichelleScarn · 04/11/2022 16:49

Jobsworths because they're doing what they get told to do? Jobsworths because they're not giving out food and drinks for free?
Whats the point of the bus passes then if someone should get to ride for free just because they look the right age?
And I've already said as have others the applauding a group of people who were abusive to a waitress for not giving away free stuff in a cafe is despicable.

Madamum18 · 04/11/2022 17:57

Total jobsworth and ridiculous. As are some of the comments on here! What on earth happened to a bit of common sense and kindness!!

marktayloruk · 04/11/2022 18:06

In the improbable event of my ever running a company or local authority, anyone uttering the words "more than my job's worth" will be fired.

Doggate1 · 04/11/2022 18:31

Karma always finds a way … you might have to wait a while and you might never get to embrace it but it will find the bus driver.

ClaudiasWinkleMan · 04/11/2022 18:38

Complain. It’s awful behaviour by the bus driver.

Alifeinaday · 04/11/2022 18:40

Surely there is a process to follow if the machine stops working mid route. Why can’t there be a similar visual check process if the pass or technology doesn’t work. Seems ridiculous to not have a back up process. There is a difference between not having your pass versus having a perfectly valid pass with you but the technology doesn’t work.
