We have energy saving bulbs too (DH had spate of going 'all green')and they take ages to brighten up. He is the same person who will go into a room in the middle of the day with the sun shining, and put the lights on [rolleyes]

Furball · 29/01/2008 07:25

they said they will phase out all normal bulbs and we will just be left with these dim things [oh great!]

My question, is always these bulbs are £5 each - how long does it take a normal bulb to use £5 worth of electricity?

XAliceInWonderlandX · 29/01/2008 07:31

they are meant to be cheaper in the long term, but i guess it depends on everything else you use in your household

I do try to be green, but this dim light is maddening

They use an hours worth of electricity warming up too so if you have them in your bathroom for instance they're useless.

They give me migranes so i wont have them in the house.

Light bulbs should give off light imo .

I think it's a bloody cheek phasing out the old ones.
The energy saving ones aren't as bright as they're meant to be so the saving is nothing like as high as they're claiming, plus they have mercury in so they're more dangerous and expensive to dispose of, plus the 'wasted' energy in the old ones is actually just being dispersed as heat energy so in a country where you have the heating on most of the year it's a moot point whether it is actually 'wasted' at all.
I don't object to legislation to protect the environment, but the numbers have got to actually add up, and it's not at all clear they do in this case.

i think i am going to have to stockpile lightbulbs which work

must get up even earlier to try and let the bulbs warm up

seems a very strange way to try to save money
