Just had some on a crusty roll for lunch. TBF just had covid so everything tastes a bit weird. But Brie just doesn't taste as good as it used to. Sort of bland and gloopy. Have I just grown out of it?

I don’t think it’s a post covid cheese tbh! It’s v mild and requires full tastebuds!

it’s best at room temp but yes, is a bit gloopy and bland.

Cheese shop nearby has brought out a Brie with wild garlic running through it. Now that was a game changer 🤤

CustardySergeant · 02/11/2022 14:06

If it's French brie (e.g President brand) it's lovely, but Somerset brie is totally tasteless IME.

BakedTattie · 02/11/2022 14:07

brie De meux is the only nice Brie

Buttons294749 · 02/11/2022 14:08

Yanbu camembert all the way!

Dartmoorcheffy · 02/11/2022 14:09

Try epoisses, it's so much nicer than any brie.

NemoNotThatOne · 02/11/2022 14:09

Proper Brie de Meaux from a good cheesemonger is lovely, completely different from the supermarket stuff.

Applesandcarrots · 02/11/2022 14:10

You need to leave it in a fridge for about 2 weeks after bbf date😉
They are less and less matured in shops

Yes, agreed. Brie with attitude, I call it.

Onceuponawhileago · 02/11/2022 14:12

So, you get a brie and unwrap. Put it back in the wooden box, cut an x shallowly in the centre. Pop 1/4 glass of dry white wine in there, three spoons of honey with a sprinkle of walnuts. Cover lightly with foil. Oven for 15 minutes, serve with crusty bread and a glass of white wine preferably loire or chenn blanc. Thats how you do brie!

PAFMO · 02/11/2022 14:14

A lot of Brie in supermarkets still has that lighter chalky line running through its centre, even right up to "sell by" dates.
I agree with pp that you need to go often well beyond that, leave it out if the fridge till it's oozy.
M&S tends to be ready when you buy it.

balalake · 02/11/2022 14:18

Try Somerset Brie.

SudocremOnEverything · 02/11/2022 14:26

i think you’re just buying the wrong Brie.

Loads of supermarket cheese is quite crap really. Have you got a cheesemonger nearby?

BigFatLiar · 02/11/2022 14:29

I'm struggling with the concept of a disappointing c

BigFatLiar · 02/11/2022 14:30

Disappointing cheese

Blast cold fingers on a phone

ZeroFuchsGiven · 02/11/2022 14:31

I love cheese of most varieties but I agree its a very bland taste, maybe ive only ever bought cheap ones though, I might try a more expensive one and give it a go.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 02/11/2022 14:33

Also championing Camembert as a far superior soft French cheese. Especially one so ripe it’s practically butter.

Prescottdanni123 · 02/11/2022 14:37

A nice brie with caramelised onion chutney is the best

I was about to say try Somerset brie it's so much nicer!

Anniissa · 02/11/2022 14:40

Supermarket Brie is usually very bland and disappointing. It can be improved by leaving it past its sell by date and waiting until it’s matured a bit more. Avoid it if it’s got a chalky line through the middle as this tends to indicate it’s been kept in too cold a fridge and it doesn’t often improve). Get a decent Brie from a cheesemonger and it will usually be riper and tastier. Get it out of the fridge a good hour or two before eating to get it nice and runny and so you can get more flavour - Brie is at its best when it’s oozing and trying to run away!

Crumpleton · 02/11/2022 14:43

There are a few nice one's as mentioned..
I always serve at room temperature it's much nicer, creamy.
Few crackers and a handful of cold grapes...lovely

Fudgeytastic · 02/11/2022 14:43

Stick it in a bagel with some smoked bacon. Perfection.

kingtamponthefurred · 02/11/2022 14:54

Brie has always been the most boring cheese. Try goat's cheese instead.

BarrelOfOtters · 02/11/2022 14:59

Baked brie is lovely - but baked cheese of any description is just lovely.

Brie used as a foil for bacon - yes, I can get with that. But that's for it's bacon delivering capabilities.

It was a M&S Somerset Brie - and a bit oozy - but not full on oozy- No chalky seam.

brie de meaux left out of the fridge is better.

But honestly, a camembert, really good cheddar or a blue..or a good goat's cheese is more floating my boat these days.

Brie needs bacon to taste nice. But bacon tastes nicer without brie. Just ditch the brie.

Even better with camembert!
