Bomb attack on Sunday

On Sunday, a crazed man blew himself up with a petrol bomb outside a migrant reception centre in Dover, protesting against illegal immigration. How terrifying for everyone living or working there!

It's barely dented the news bulletins until now, and only today have specialist-anti-terrorism police been called in.

Today the Head of Counter Terrorism Policing South East said "What appears clear is that this despicable offence was targeted and likely to be driven by some form of hate-filled grievance, though this may not necessarily meet the threshold of terrorism."

The suspect was a white British man.

AIBU to think that if this was a brown man, targeting something inherently English, a LOT more would have been made of it?

I read about it pretty much as soon as it had happened. Its been all over the news for days.

RoseslnTheHospital · 01/11/2022 23:33

I don't know what news sources you consume but it's been all over the ones I use. It's led to a lot of pressure on the Home Secretary which has also been constantly in the news.

BagOfBollocks · 01/11/2022 23:35

Huh? It's been all over the news.

  1. He didn't blow himself up outside a migrant centre.
  1. It was all over the news as soon as possible after it happened.
  1. Unless the police have evidence of a terrorist link why would the anti terrorist unit be involved? Presumably when they searched his house such evidence was found and the and the case reviewed.

It’s been all over the news.

KrisAkabusi · 01/11/2022 23:40

I voted YABU because it was all over the news yesterday. I saw live reports on Sky news, it was on the BBC news. I live in Ireland and I'm well aware of it happening

RewildingAmbridge · 01/11/2022 23:45

It's been all over the news, which
papers do you read?! The ones I've read explain a lot including current police response around counter terrorism, and also discuss the great and subsequent displacement of the residents. There was a whole need piece on radio 4 on my way home today.
My understanding is he threw some shoddily made petrol bombs (fireworks and petrol) then drive off to a service station nearby and killed himself.
Two people at the centre suffered minor injuries.

butterfliedtwo · 01/11/2022 23:48

It's been reported in the UK news, and I read about it where I am outside the UK. YABU.

ialwayswantedyoutogo · 01/11/2022 23:49

what news are you watching? It’s been on all the sites I look at

Hapoydayz · 01/11/2022 23:49

It's been all over the news. Including, ironically, some news services whose output potentially contributed to a climate in which this horrible act was more likely.

VioletTopaz · 01/11/2022 23:52

It’s been all over the news, and currently the front page of the BBC says counter-terrorism police are investigating it…..

MarshaMelrose · 01/11/2022 23:53

It was all over news as soon as it happened. Politicians sent out tweets. There were pictures of the car. Information that the guy killed himself in a service station.
Two and a half days later, you still haven't grasped the true facts that we all knew on Sunday.

AiryFairyLights · 01/11/2022 23:55

I'm in Ireland and have seen it on the news and btw he didn't blow himself up!

All that needs to be said, really.

Are you reading The Beano OP?

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 02/11/2022 00:46

Do you not live in the UK op ? Because it was reported here within minutes of it happening across all news sites 😶

FourForYouGlenCocoYouGoGlenCoco · 02/11/2022 00:53

It was definitely on the news on Sunday afternoon (in the papers, at least - Guardian, Times, Daily Mail). And the man didn’t blow himself up with the petrol bomb, he tried to bomb the centre housing the asylum seekers and then he killed himself in a separate incident.

Glitteratitar · 02/11/2022 02:50

Yes it’s been in the news, but the level of coverage and type of coverage is very different to how it would be reported if it was a brown man.

I agree OP. If it was a brown man, there would be the “terror attack” and “breaking news” headlines right away, and it would be a top story for days.

💯 agree that if this had been done by a brown man (and/or a Muslim) then the media and police would be screaming terrorism.

This is the fucked up world we live in, OP.

And you can see the hypocrisy lives on here on MN.

notimagain · 02/11/2022 07:35

Not sure I agree with some of that.

From memory post many solo attacks the police have been very often quick out of the blocks with statements such as "terrorist links not suspected" or similar.

The MSM are another matter.
