Does anyone else get this? Is it a thing? Had a bottle wine last night and smoked and today iv been so edgy and thinking I’m having a heart attack

The last time I had a lot to drink (maybe 5 drinks) I was awake for about 2 hours with a racing heart. I was honestly about to wake my husband to call an ambulance because I thought I was about to have a heart attack. I splashed ice cold water over my face and neck and it seemed to stop the racing but it took me an hour of tea and reading to be able to calm down.
Have since read that alcohol can cause palpitations. Never had this when younger but I am extremely careful now and won't have more than 2 or 3 drinks. It was terrifying.

It's why I quit drinking. Never thought I could do it because I loved a drink but the anxiety was off the scale. So much so that I'd often have to take a diazipam the next day. And then those triggered full on panic attacks. So that was me done. The longer I've been off it the easier it gets.

Yep, me too.

Beer doesn't do this to me, wine does and gin does, but I find both of them make me a bit weird when I'm drinking them anyway

minipie · 01/11/2022 22:30

Yep ever since age 40 I wake up at 3 or 4am with massive paranoia about what I said or did the night before. And about other things, nobody likes me, I’m a terrible parent, I’m failing at life etc.

I try to stick to 2-3 drinks max now. Sadly.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 01/11/2022 22:35

Physically I'm fine mentally I'm a mess. What did I say? Full on insomnia to really help me worry.

strawberrytilda · 01/11/2022 22:36

Yes, I have completely stopped drinking because of this. I wasn't a big drinker - maybe a glass or two of wine a week but noticed a pattern that I would feel anxious and sad the times I did drink. Feel a lot better since quitting.

Kiplingroad · 01/11/2022 22:38

I'm late 40s and even 2 glasses of wine now makes me fragile the day after - not physically hungover, just touchy and unhappy.

Can't do it anymore so am sticking to apple juice.

Good to read this, I have found past year or so if I have few drinks wake up after 3-4 hour very anxious
Really takes the good out of a night out.

Whoopsywoo · 01/11/2022 22:59

I’m 42 so probably in peri too! It’s been awful I have had really bad palpitations but iv been doing stats like oxygen and heart rate and all fine. Think I’m having a gerd attack too. I def won’t be doing this again at all not quite the relaxing experience I had in mind!

Just did exactly this and it worked thank you

Things interesting, I'm of that age and after downing a (rare) bottle of wine felt anxious (also rare). Tbh I thought it was because of something I was overthinking for work, rather than it being a lady of a certain age thing.
Get checked out by a doctor just in case op, a relative with an occasional irregular heartbeat gets these symptoms with alcohol.

TheWelshposter · 02/11/2022 07:31

I'm so glad you're feeling a bit better, it's an awful feeling.

Krupkrups · 02/11/2022 07:39

YES!! There was a similar thread on this about 4 months ago. With me it depends what I drink…or should I say the ABV of what I drink much, I’ve realised it’s much worse with a strong ABV white or Rose. Less so with a fizzy or spirits.

WestSouthWest · 02/11/2022 07:43

I can relate. Even one gin and tonic or glass of wine these days is enough to trigger uncontrollable panic attacks the next day. I’m now 6 months alcohol free and don’t miss it at all. The app reframe helped me.
