Half a cab is plenty, with bread and butter that’s a decent amount of calories for a lunch

Topsyturvy78 · 01/11/2022 15:02

Yeah I used to think it was grose putting ketchup or brown sauce on. But someone pointed out it's no different to me putting soup on.

bakewellbride · 01/11/2022 15:03

Whole tin in this house (with bread and butter) and we are all healthy weights.

Half a tin of beans I can kind of understand but not soup.

Why have I never tried this!?

Aldi do a green bag of garlic and parsley bruschetta, they're lovely with any tomato based soup.

shumway · 01/11/2022 15:05

I have a 600g tub to myself.

Rosenotred · 01/11/2022 15:05

Soup isn't exactly filling unless it's some type of carribean soup which contains dumplins, veg and meat/chicken.

MN is distorted when it comes to food. Have a tin of soup? And what do you do with the rest?

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 01/11/2022 15:05

I've just bought another tin of soup and some garlic bread to try with it

If it's French Onion Soup I have two tins.

I don't eat bread though.

How can you possibly eat French Onion soup without a thick piece of baguette toasted with cheese floating in the soup?

dearhummingbirds · 01/11/2022 15:11

I have half a tin for lunch, and a couple of slices of buttered bread. I like soup, but somewhat see it as a bread dipping sauce 😁

I think you're making soup wrong :)

I think you're right. Most soups I've made have been delicious, barring the one I made from Michael Mosley's celery, broccoli and Stilton, which was disgusting sludge.

Don't know what MM did wrong but brocolli and stilton is one of my favourites, with a liberal helping of slivers of toasted almonds.

SleepyAnkylosaurus · 01/11/2022 15:12

You ascend to MN greatness if you're the width of my thumb and enjoy a glance of soup for lunch...

Gingerkittykat · 01/11/2022 15:12

I've now got a craving for tomato soup.

I'm going to have half a can with a dairylea and ham sandwich to dip into it.

Oaktree55 · 01/11/2022 15:13

Tin per person are you anorexic?

In anticipation of the way this thread will go

Half a time AND bread and butter - OMG if I ate that I would be full for a WEEK - that's too much food - I eat a tin of soup over 4 days and no bread - I'm 5ft 4" and a size 2 - teeny tiny me

In the real work - a tin is fine per person ffs - it's soup not melted lard

😂😂😂 ahh that made me really laugh

It wouldnt be enough for me and I'm 5'1 and a size 6 😂

GnomeDePlume · 01/11/2022 14:22

Never yet had any soup where I have thought 'I wonder if there is any more of that, it was delicious'.

Half a tin of soup would be plenty for me. Its sole purpose is to dampen the bread slightly.

Then you've never had my pea and ham soup, the very mention of it brings a queue of grandchildren to my door.

It's half a tin/tub each here and plenty of bread for everyone in the family (two boys 11 and 13 are full after that). I do usually add extra to the soup though like spinach or chopped chicken or whatever, but not always!
Surprised to see we're in the minority, but honestly we don't have eating disorders, that genuinely does it for us if we've already had a cooked meal in the day! 😆

It's the bread. Bread is roughly 100 calories per slice or more -

Arenanewbie · 01/11/2022 15:22

I looked up Heinz tomato soup and it’s half a tin per portion, you are right OP. But I think it’s more a starter or a snack then a meal.

Also googled borrowers and found this article in the Telegraph. I’m amazed how science moved since 2016, you are not only exist OP but even on MN!

Posted too soon @kilo If youre supplementing it with loads of bread of course half a tin is enough.

Choconut · 01/11/2022 15:24

It's probably because if they say a serving is half a tin then the salt/fat or whatever content doesn't look quite so awful. Just like a serving of sugary cereal is tiny to make it appear not quite so horrendous in the sugar content.

Ok so in a full can of Heinz tomato soup there is 2.2g of salt. That's more than a third of your recommended daily intake in just in that tin - plus bread and butter on top.....

I've just checked Tesco online and the only ones that are around 300g are Weight Watchers soups, which I'm not keen on, and Campbells condensed which obviously makes more than that once you add water. Maybe they just don't sell them where I live.

www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/258148741

They do sell them, but as you say, maybe not at your Tesco :)

My in-laws who are both in their 80s with tiny appetites are the only people I know who would consider that a portion- full tin each here

Marleymerm · 01/11/2022 15:27

"normal" is different to everyone. I personally want a whole tin and half a loaf of bread, but my husband pours a tiny amount into a cup and has a couple of slices of bread. Soups not filling for the most part so I'd say your friend making a tin per person is very normal. But you only wanting half a tin is also normal.

... so what if you have ½ of your salt from one meal?
Surely it doesn't matter until you go over your daily intake? And even then occasionally going over wouldn't be an issue.

My tin of soup says it's two portions (400g)

Armadillidium · 01/11/2022 15:30

I don’t like canned soup due to the salt content but my favourite carton of soup is 600g. I have 300g with feta pieces in it.

200g of soup makes me think Oliver Twist.
