For not having alternatives for trick or treaters?

Last night we had lots of kids trick or treating and was very busy answering the door. It was lovely to see all the different costumes and all the excited kids but at around 7pm we sat down to eat our tea so didn't want to be disturbed.

I decided to leave a bowl of mini haribo and squashems out next to the pumpkins and also inserted some lollipops into a pumpkin too. I figured that way the parents could see they were lollies and could decide if their kids were allowed them and also the younger kiddies had already been earlier on in the night.

Around 7.30pm there was a knock on the door and I answered to find a woman and her son stood on the doorstep. She said she knocked to tell me the bowl was empty! I was a bit taken aback and thanked her for letting me know and said her son was welcome to help himself to a lolly instead, it was at that point she said he wasn't really allowed lollies so she'd knocked for an alternative!!!!!

I explained there was no alternatives if the bowl was empty, and she stomped off in a huff. Even though my DC is too old to trick or treat we still put out pumpkins and welcome trick or treaters but surely, we're now not expected to have a never-ending supply of sweets!?!

All of ours came after 6 after it got dark. But parents might not want to take littleuns out then. If they have gone to school/nursery dressed up some even go T or T on the way home so they're not going out again.

I don't know how anyone had any sweets left after 6pm. The trick or treaters started calling at 4pm and there was a constant stream of mini vampires, witches, brides of Dracula, Dracula himself, Jason from Friday 13th and the bloke from Scream, from then onwards. I brought the pumpkin indoors once the sweets were all gone, otherwise the kids would have had the choice of a Dairylea triangle or an apple.

I do live in a village with a high concentration of young families though.

I think it depends on where you live.

Theres a street where we live that is halloween central (a new build american suberbs type street where every house is done increadibly at halloween... projectors of 3d ghosts, giant spiders crawling over houses, fountains runing with blood, creapy soundtracks etc...) they get ALL the trick or treaters.

I live 2 houses away and only got 2 trick or treater dispite having signs up, LED candles, 5 pumpkins etc...

I have never had a 'selection' of sweets though, you get what your given... last year it was traffic light lollies, this year halloween popping candy. Giving out sweets is simply a nice gesture, I buy 1 multipack bag of something and thats what everyone get as theres always loads left from just 1 bag never mind buying more for 'choice'.

What the hell! Took my 5 year old out last night and was told twice they had run out, it was fine! Also got given loads of stuff unsuitable like lollies, it’s fine as I will just eat them (or put them in the bin if I don’t like them 😂)

she is a weirdo, pay no attention!

momtoboys · 01/11/2022 13:13

My brother tells a story about when he was in secondary that his friends parents went out for the evening of Halloween and left the kids in charge of handing out the sweets. They quickly ran out of treats and they panicked and they started making and handing out toast. When the bread ran out they gave the last child the toaster! LOL

MrsClatterbuck · 01/11/2022 13:16

We no longer get any trick or treaters after moving house. It usually started at teatime in our old house till maybe 8pm. Only 2 kids where we live now and they don't seem to bother and their parents probably took them to the fireworks our council holds each year. Dh went down and said it was bunged but for the 1st time I didn't bother.

There seems to be a spate of threads where the OP posts a thread and the antagonist shows up soon after.

I don't believe any of it.

Few years ago one of my neighbours asked why I 'refused' to enter into the community spirit and decorate/answer the door on Halloween and give out sweets to the children....... I said that unfortunately I was at work that evening, and was told I should have put in a day off request, so I could buy and give out sweets to other people's children.......
Some people are bonkers 🤣

😧
'Entitled' doesn't even begin to cover that.

I can assure you I'm real but you're correct in that the antagonist literally appeared within a few comments. I was going to report them but I found the posts amusing at the craziness, someone else did report though.

We get so many here and I was out of sweets by 6pm. I just put a sign out to say no more sweets so no one knocked after that.

Why is a lolly an unsuitable option for trick or treaters? I took my 4yr old out and those are her favourite. She was choosing lollies over chocolates and Haribo packs.

They are choking hazards for smaller children

wackamole · 01/11/2022 13:43

This also gives me "Friends" vibes. There's another episode where they run out of Halloween candy and someone goes out to get more, but in the meantime Rachel (who has volunteered to give out the candy as she's just discovered she's pregnant and is feeling "maternal") starts handing out money. After the candy bowl is refilled, one child challenges her and says he'd only come become because he heard there was money, he doesn't want any candy. They get into it, he calls her mean, and she offers to write him a cheque (he says no).

majorcamaiden · 01/11/2022 13:44

@Underanothersky yes I agree. But at 5 I would have assumed ok? We had a mixture of everything including lollies. To be fair, I try not to hand them out to the really little ones.

EVERYTHING is a choking hazzard, if eaten correctly (sat not running around) and supervised its no more dangerous than a pack of haribo or chocolate buttons (both of which can clag and block windpipes too).

My daughter came running over to me saying “mum mum I cant believe this house gives out oranges that’s not Halloween!” (She’s only 5) I thought they had ran out of candy so was giving oranges 😬 or maybe doing it to be cheeky but it turned out they did have candy as well but my Daughter picked the orange 🤦🏻 Wouldn’t have said anything to them personally though it was my son who said they did

How is it cheeky for them to give out oranges? They’ve giving out free food. You should be grateful for anything! Offering oranges is fine, if you don’t want don’t take. How entitled to say it’s cheeky that they were offering oranges instead of or as well as sweets.

Oh ffs I didn’t mean it like that I meant as in doing it for a laugh as I’ve seen people saying they will give out fruit/ veg for a laugh!! That’s all I meant like it was meant in a cheeky (cheeky as in jokey/playful!) way not a CF way!! Ffs this site is way too serious 🙄

QuebecBagnet · 01/11/2022 14:11

There’s a house in our village which has a pumpkin out but when the kids knock they get given a pamphlet about Christianity. 😂. I’d be happy enough with an orange compared to that!

You just complained and your daughter complained there were just oranges. What an attitude problem.

SpinningFloppa · 01/11/2022 14:14

And she obviously did want it as she picked it over the candy I thought it was hilarious and that’s what I thought the point was as a few of the houses were pulling pranks, someone put out a box saying candy inside and you had to put your hand in and it was just a bowl of water. Once again I didn’t mean it in a “cheeky fucker” way cheeky has more than one meaning and can also mean jokey/playful/mischievous I thought it was a prank so kids come knocking for candy and get fruit that’s all!!!!

GreyElephantsWearingYellowPyjamas · 01/11/2022 14:16

You read it wrong that wasn’t the point the point was there WAS candy read again she chose the orange over the candy!! She didn’t complain we both thought it was funny you need to get a life honestly no one complained she was surprised that’s all you need to stop taking life so seriously 😒

IAmAReader · 01/11/2022 14:18

That's so funny the culprit has showed up, I always wondered if that ever happens on Mumsnet!

Honestly all this is just one the many reasons I wish we hadn't Americanised/commercialised Halloween! America has a lot of great things but we tend to import the worst of it over here 😂

It's just OTT and entitled parents are getting out of control - I can't believe they are knocking on doors to say bowls or pumpkins are empty or the other thread on here about a parent who went trick or treating with their kid a couple of days earlier and was annoyed the person didn't have sweets ready.

No, you read it again, it says there wasn’t candy.

I don’t believe it was, I think that poster was complaining and is now doubling down. I’m entitled to believe what I read, especially as I read it correctly and you didn’t.

As someone mentioned, choking risk. I read a news story about a 7 year old almost choking to death on one when it came off the stick. Plus I have a toddler who might grab it if they’re lying around.
