Open the curtains or leave them closed?

Curious to know what you do/would do - if you leave for work before it gets light in the mornings, and get home when it’s dark again, do you open your curtains/blinds in the morning to close them again when you arrive home or leave them closed all day?

I’ve been told that my choice is strange so wondered what other people do!

I opened them before I left and will close them as soon as I get home to keep the heat in (and because it will already be dark)
If I didn't open them the house would get stuffy and start to smell.

Definitely open them! Horrible to think of your house sitting dark all day. I think it seems VERY unhouseproud to leave them shut.

I think the room feels weird if the curtains have been closed all day.

Well it don’t close ours overnight anyway but in the situation you describe

open curtains before leaving for work
open window before leaving for work
close curtains when getting home

if the sun shines during the day it may warm the room

Open curtains in the morning and close them at night.
Open windows for a bit in the morning and close before going to work.
Except in boiling hot summer when keeping the sun out and temp down-windows and curtains shut in the day.

I’d open them, and have a lamp on a timer.

My plants would die if I didn't open the curtains. So I'd do that and close them again in the evening.

Depends. I open them to give light to the plants. If there were no plants, I’d probably keep them closed. It helps keep the heat in, so it depends on the temperature as well. I often don’t open the bedroom curtains. Kitchen blinds are opened, though.

I open the curtains and upstairs windows before I go to work and teen DD shut s most of them when she gets home. My parents can see my house from theirs so unlikely to be a security risk and the cats use the window as a catflap onto the porch below and into the garden.

Open them. The uv light from the sun reduces certain bacteria that can fester in dust.

Thanks for the replies! Clearly I am just odd/in the minority because I just leave them shut - it seems pointless to open them in the dark, to then come home and close them again in the dark. I get why you would do it though if you have plants etc.

I open them, but actually, energy crisis and all that I wonder if it makes more sense to leave them closed. I was brought up that it was all a bit slovenly to leave curtains closed though (unless someone had died).

Open, aside from during the heatwave when I leave them closed to stop the sun getting in but it feels grimy and slovenly. Houses with their curtains closed all day give me the heebie-jeebies.

Including in lounge when I'm wfh upstairs , I'd o haven't sat in lounge already and opened them

Burglars won't know when we're in or out as we have an irregular pattern of opening curtains

Open them so my neighbours don't think I'm dead.
