I stink

I’ve been really struggling with this and I don’t know what to do.

I used to shower once a day (a proper shower, not a quick wash) but I found that by the end of the day I smelled really badly, as if I haven’t showered. I’ve tried everything type of deodorant and antiperspirant, and I’ve tried every shower gel and scrub and wash and soap. I’ve also tried using no products at all. NOTHING makes a difference.

I usually shower twice a day because if I don’t, I smell so badly it’s noticeable and obviously I can’t have that. I’m not particularly sweaty (I do sweat but not an abnormally amount) I just smell. It’s a BO/musty smell and really horrible. if I shower before work I can actively smell myself later on.

ive even tried Mitchem, no difference

Am I just a total freak? This has been going on for a while and I’m too embarrassed to get a boyfriend because I can’t stay at someone’s house or hang out for too long without having a shower.

any help or advice would be really appreciated, thank you in advance x

My husband sweats a lot at work, he uses perspirex. You can get it on Amazon, He said it works really well

Macaroni1924 · 31/10/2022 22:01

Sorry if I’m on the wrong road completely but I know you mentioned you eat a normal diet but do you eat enough calories to support your body healthily. I have to say from reading your posts my first thought was eating disorder with the breath/periods but then I suppose you would know yourself if that was the issue.

Only other thought was are you on any medications? I was on steroids and I stank. My armpits would get such bad bo. I ended up using a sanex stick and sanex spray and it helped massively. Still a slight smell after work but nothing like what it was. Thankfully when the meds stopped the smell stopped.

I can hardly believe a gp dismissed your AWOL menstrual cycle and declared it was down to “luck” wtf? Confused

List all the symptoms you mention on here and ask to see a different doctor at your practice before wasting all your money on soaps, deodorants, Botox and the like.

Youve been totally fobbed off

I promise that’s what they said! But to be fair on the doctor that was in response to me saying flippantly maybe I’m just lucky not to get them after they said I’m healthy and don’t have any problems causing it

they said yeah I could just be lucky (I think what was meant was that there was no problem in the blood test and there was no cause) but that it was also possibly due to my weight and sports x

You need to wash your armpits with an acne wash. The chemical in it get rid of bacteria meaning you’ll smell less. I use it in the summer and it’s a godsend. Also use a mild aha toner once a week on your armpits. Don’t use the acne wash on the same day

Pixiedust1234 · 31/10/2022 22:02

I’ve had all the usual BV treatments and I’ve also been treated for thrush but the smell is always there and I just assumed I was unlucky and just smelled more than normal.

Get a referral. My DD had BV and thrush treatments for years that never did anything. She ended up having a little operation that cured it, cant be precise but I think it was to do with the hymen needing to be removed so everything could drain properly. Never came back. Took same amount of time as a smear.

However having no periods at 20 is a major red flag, please get that checked by a different GP.

soapysoapsoap1 · 31/10/2022 22:03

I’d never considered it could be lactose intolerance either, is a naturalpath someone that does natural medicine? I’ll have a Google for some in my area. At this point I’ll try anything anyone can suggest because this is having such a big impact on my life now x

OP imo it's not normal for periods to just stop with BMI of 20. Would be good to get this looked into.

This - it is not normal

get it investigated and get the GP to check diabetes, thyroid etc

bluefrog11 · 31/10/2022 22:03

Botox under the armpits. Works a treat.

And wash with salicylic body wash, really scrub it in under your arms.

Spookysparkles · 31/10/2022 22:07

I’m so sorry your having to put up with this. You sound like a lovely person and I hope you get this fixed.
as other have posted - it sounds like there maybe something underlying here. I’m not medically qualified but I think you should consider changing doctors. Their attitude towards you so far strikes me as rather blazé, such irregular periods in early 20s should be investigated properly IMO.
sending hugs x

determinedtomakethiswork · 31/10/2022 22:08

I wonder whether this is a problem with your nose or sinuses rather than you actually smelling bad. Has anyone else agreed that you smell? The reason I think it might be your nose is because you say you have very bad breath in the morning.

Thank you very much, that’s really kind of you to say x

everyone has been really helpful and it’s so appreciated x

I’m officially the worst drip feeder I know, but I think the reason the doctors weren’t concerned about the periods is that it’s been going on for a while and isn’t a recent change, my mum took me when I was a teen but they said it was just AWOL from puberty and would sort itself but then it didn’t, that’s when my mum pushed me to go back x

Bad breath despite good oral hygiene is usually a sign of problems with gut bacteria. This could also be the cause of your BO. Aloe vera juice, probiotics and various other supplements help with this problem. I would recommend speaking to your GP though.

Ficti · 31/10/2022 22:10

You could have raised testosterone levels, that would give you a pungent aroma

Yeah other people have noticed it as well unfortunately, i thought maybe my sense of smell was off but others that I trust can smell it too x

Please, please see a private specialist. Something is underlying here, if you only drink water, and plenty of it, your pee should be virtually colourless NOT yellow/green.

Ist pee in the day should be straw coloured, but after that should be paler.

Your periods stopping and being all over the place is another indication. The abnormally strong BO is another.

Worth spending money to see someone privately and get tests done to establish what is going on here.

This isn't just change your deodorant time - this needs medical examinations and tests.

Hexenjagd · 31/10/2022 22:11

It isn’t tonsil stones is it?

when I get them, everything stinks.

smells almost kind of like musty cowshit.

Thurst · 31/10/2022 22:11

I can’t say what it could be, you’ve already had good advice on that. But my advice is not to let this slide. Visit the GP a keep insisting they find out what’s wrong. Explain how it means you’re not confident to have relationships and that it’s really effecting your everyday life.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 31/10/2022 22:11

My only concern with Botox under the arms is that I'm pretty sure sweating is a healthy for the body.

Mammajay · 31/10/2022 22:12

Years since but for vaginal smells, tight jeans used to be one factor for me. Not a complete solution, but get a flannel and wash your undercarriage every time you use the toilet.

declutteringmymind · 31/10/2022 22:17

I definitely think you should see your GP. The only other thing I think it could be is that you have stripped the health bacteria off your skin with over washing?

Try a bit of yogurt on a sanitary towel to reestablish the flora around your genitals and maybe look for some probiotics? A bit of a stretch but might be worth researching further.

Luredbyapomegranate · 31/10/2022 22:18

OP I think you should talk to your mum and really tackle this - you’ve got several very unusual symptoms that are impacting on your life. It is possible something serious is going on, and armpit Botox is not going to fix it.

It’s not normal to stop your periods for no reason (BMI of 20 is a normal weight, not skinny, so unless your body fat is incredibly low that is no explanation); it’s not normal to have green tinged urine - even if you aren’t drinking enough it should be yellow, if you drink a lot of water it should be straw coloured; it’s not normal to have a fish smelling vagina, it’s a sign of an infection or imbalance; and it’s not normal to have bad breath and such a problem with a musty body smell.

Taken together this is really abnormal.

Private GP costs can mount up. So go and see a different GP in your. NHS practice (or register with a new practice) and it would be a good idea to take your mum to help you ask questions and confirm the smell isn’t in your head.

If you take a look at the NHS website, unexplained body odour can be a sign of kidney or liver disease, diabetes, a hormone issue - or there is also an unusual condition called
Trimethylaminuria

I am not a doctor but I imagine the first step is a general blood test.

You mustn’t allow yourself to be fobbed off - go and see a different GP and take your mum with you. This could be serious and even if it isn’t, it’s going to have a negative impact on your life.

TheTeddyBears · 31/10/2022 22:21

For BO underarm sweat try odaban. I put it on at night before bed and wash off in the morning. It's really strong and stinks also stings a bit when u out it ok but it does work.

It sounds like something else is going on though especially if this hasn't been the norm for you. It wouldn't hurt to see your gp.

Bar of soap to wash with and Sure Maximum Protection , Mitchum is useless on me.

I’ve just discovered Sure is better than Mitchum for me as well. Mitchum was out of stock so I had to choose something else which I will now be sticking with.

Mummieslncorporated · 31/10/2022 22:27

I know you say you've tried every deodorant, does that include nuud? It's amazing. It does something to the bacteria, and it lasts for days. They say it lasts between 3 and 7 days. I reapply after 5 days. I've not risked trying it for longer! A tiny tube lasts me for four or five months, and it's very eco-friendly. Not cheap to buy, but definitely great value as it lasts so long.
